Recap / The Handmaids Tale S 4 E 6 Vows

Go To

After a shocking reunion with Moira, June contemplates the possibility of freedom, and confronts the unfulfilled promises she's made to herself and to Luke. Flashbacks show June's relationship with Moira when they were good friends, and Moira's reaction to June moving in with Luke.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • All for Nothing: Oona seems to think the mission was this, as they have to abandon Chicago, having had time to give out virtually no medical aid.
  • Babies Make Everything Better: In her flashnack, as June is moving in with Luke, she asks Luke whether if she isn't able to conceive a child that would negatively affect their marriage the same way it affected Luke's marriage with Annie. Luke shoots that assertion down, saying that his issues in his first marriage went far beyond being unable to have children.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: Once again, Gilead's incompetence with regards to security is on full display. The guard interviewing "Rachel Smith" doesn't appear to press the issue of June's complete non-answer when most security outfits are trained to pick up on such suspicious activity.
  • Heroic BSoD: As proof that June was affected by the blast that knocked her unconscious, when confronted by Moira, June treats Moira's appearance as a hallucination, thinking she isn't supposed to be here as Moira had previously "gotten out". It's only later on when June is more lucid that she realizes that Moira is indeed here in Chicago.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Oona is clearly hostile to both Moira and June for good reason: firstly that Moira (her lover) clearly lied about June, and that June's presence on the boat could get all of them in trouble with Gilead, not to mention that this would likely lead to Gilead no longer allowing the NGO to provide aid.
  • My Greatest Failure:
    • Moira still feels guilt over having to leave June behind during her attempted escape in Season 1. Of course this leads to My Greatest Second Chance in which she absolutely refuses to leave June behind this time around.
    • June sees her inability to rescue Hannah as this and the main reason she doesn't want to go back to Luke without their daughter.
  • Oh, Crap!: Moira, upon realizing that Gilead will make one more inspection of the aid ship before it returns to Canadian waters, meaning June will almost certainly be discovered.
  • The Reveal: Besides wanting to save Hannah because she loves her, a major reason June didn't take her last opportunity to escape Gilead, and has been determined to stay since, is because she doesn't want to face Luke with the knowledge that she failed to save Hannah.
  • Sadistic Choice: Three in this episode:
    • The NGO aid mission is forced to abandon Chicago when they get word that Gilead is planning another bombing during their 24-hour ceasefire deal, having been able to give out virtually no aid due to the time strain.
    • The NGO aid crew are faced with one when they learn of June's presence on the ship. If they turn June over to Gilead, she will almost certainly be executed, and quite possibly tortured before hand. However, if they keep her hidden, Gilead will either: A) tear apart the ship on an inspection and almost certainly find her, which will also mean her execution, and possibly that of the crew as well, or B) learn of June's arrival in Canada, deduced the aid organization helped her, and cut off all aid to the disputed territories, which will lead to the countless deaths of more war refugees. They put it to a vote, but June volunteers to be abandoned in a boat before the vote can be completed, although the crew seemed to be voting to turn her over to Gilead. Oona later overrules them at Moira's pleading.
    • June tries to launch a lifeboat from the ship to return to Gilead to again attempt to save Hannah. Moira forces her to stop when she insists on accompanying June, which would also almost certainly lead to one or both of their deaths.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: No, June was not unharmed from the blast that separated her and Janine. She has a concussion that leaves her confused for the first third of this episode.
  • Wham Episode: June finally escapes Gilead into Canada and reunites with Luke and Moira.
