Recap / The Goldbergs S 9 E 5 An Itch Like No Other

Go To

A Plot: With Beverly's encouragement, Mr. Glascott moves in next door to the Goldbergs and slowly goes from friendly neighbor to cluelessly intrusive.

B Plot: Barry lands in urgent care with a case of poison ivy in a compromising area, requiring Erica and Geoff to constantly monitor him.

  • Comically Missing the Point: When Glascott invites himself into Beverly's "book club", he doesn't realize that it's just an excuse for them to admire the hunky men on romance novel covers, instead chastising them for not actually reading the book and preparing to have them write their own essays on it.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Geoff directly compares taking care of Barry to taking care of a baby, including distracting him with jingling keys and eagerly awaiting for him to walk on his own two feet; in fact, practicing for when he and Erica decide to start their own family is one of the main reasons he accepts taking care of Barry.
  • Drop-In Character: Glascott keeps popping in uninvited into the Goldberg's home, which is driving them crazy.
  • Inconvenient Itch: Barry had to use a public bathroom that was out of toilet paper, and ended up wiping his ass with poison ivy, producing a rash that he doesn't want anyone (aside from Erica and Geoff) knowing about.
  • Know Your Vines: In The Tag, Barry decides to learn more about leaves in order to avoid another Inconvenient Itch in the future, and asks Adam to help identify some he had gathered outside. However, Adam takes advantage of him, having Barry touch a specific leaf and then rub his nose and cheeks with the intent of producing a rash that looks like clown makeup.
  • Liar Revealed: While struggling to take care of Barry on her own while Geoff is "out at the lab" (after Geoff had spent more time than Erica taking care of Barry the previous day), she tries taking him with her to an acapella practice, only to spot Geoff walking out of a theater playing Twins (1988) during the drive. She confronts him about this later, calling him out for treating the experience as "parent practice" only to end up lying to her. Meanwhile, Beverly tries to get Glascott to go canoeing with another teacher on a day she plans to host a BBQ at her house, only for their canoe to end up capsized, and Glascott returning in the middle of the event and feeling heartbroken that he was intentionally snubbed. Both situations are apologized for soon after, with all parties recognizing a need for limits and agreeing to be more considerate in the future.
  • Plot Parallel: Both the A and B plots involve a man that doesn't respect personal boundaries while enjoying the attention of others, and the consequences of lying in order to take a break from them.
  • Polly Wants a Microphone: Glascott insists that he's doing fine, but his parrot saying "I'm so lonely" suggests otherwise.
  • Power of Trust: Erica and Geoff are the only people Barry willingly reaches out to when he gets his Inconvenient Itch, because they're the two most trustworthy people he knows (including his own parents).
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Barry doesn't want to take his medicine, or for Geoff to feed him his pill in a piece of cheese, Geoff offers to make him a "totally unmedicated milkshake" that he accepts without hesitation.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Glascott is described as visiting from sunrise to sunset, and his parrot keeps Adam up at night...which he can see and apologize for, since his sitting room has the perfect view of Adam's bedroom. Meanwhile, in the B Plot, Barry lives with Erica and Geoff while recovering and has to be constantly monitored like an infant.
