A Plot: Inspired by The Princess Bride, Adam decides to get his own sword and sign up for the school's fencing team. Murray is happy to hear that Adam wants to participate in a sport...until Adam panics during his first match.

B Plot: Beverly tries to play matchmaker for Barry's wrestling coach Rick Mellor and Erica's voice teacher Ms. Cinoman, to the dismay of the teens.

  • Batman Gambit: Adam gets Murray to buy him a fencing sword by taking up the fencing team. All so he can have a prop for his Princess Bride scenes.
  • Broken Tears: Mellor ends up breaking down emotionally when Cinoman is forced to take a leave of absence, cancelling an upcoming wrestling tourney because "what's the use of sports without love". It becomes Tears of Joy when the complaint is dropped and they can be together again.
  • Hypocrite: Murray tries to connect with Adam by saying he enjoyed Zorro, but Adam dismisses him for wearing a mask...despite Wesley's character in The Princess Bride also being a masked warrior in black for a lengthy part of the film.
    • Hypocritical Humor: Soon after that, Adam says he should keep the sword he bought despite quitting the fencing team, because he's still skillful and responsible...and then tries to show that skill by swinging it at his father's face and accidentally leaving a mark.
  • It's All About Me: Barry and Erica are both more concerned with how their teachers' emotional states are affecting their interests than about the teachers themselves.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Erica is aghast at herself when, while figuring out what to do with the jealous teacher that caused Cinoman to take an absence (and thus cost Erica a solo in an upcoming performance), she turns out to have inherited her mother's ability to hook people up.
  • The Matchmaker: Beverly shows off her talent for this, and Erica turns out to be equally skilled.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: Adam decides to quit after only a single fencing match because "it stung a little".
  • My Name Is Inigo Montoya: Adam repeats the Trope Namer line from The Princess Bride during his fencing match. His opponent is so confused about it he freaks out and forfeits.
  • Office Romance: Beverly sets up one between Mellor and Cinoman, though Principal Ball intervenes because of school policy (and because another single teacher felt jealous).
