A Plot: Adam chooses Dana as his partner for a health project where they must raise a Cabbage Patch Kid, and Beverly becomes the "grand-smother" without permission.
B Plot: Barry's friends, the JTP, are upset that Barry chooses to hang out with Lainey instead of them, and Erica is upset about the same problem with Lainey. As a result, Erica joins the JTP to break up Barry and Lainey.
- Calling the Old Man Out: Adam chews out Beverly for losing the doll he and Dana were supposed to watch, telling her when he does settle down and have kids, she will learn to butt out. It's this act that causes Ms. Taraborelli to give him and Dana an A for the project.Ms. Taraborelli: "Any parent can change a diaper. But standing up to your wife against her crazy in-laws - that's worth an "A"."
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Geoff seems to fall in love with Erica for the first time here when Season 3 onwards establishes that he's been pining after her since childhood.
- Egg Sitting: Adam and Dana have to take care of a Cabbage Patch Doll. Trouble arises when Beverly misplaces it while practicing being a "bubbie" with it.
- I Want Grandkids: Beverly is overjoyed at being a grandmother, even if her grandchild is just a doll for a class assignment.
- Operation: Jealousy: Erica's plan is this, but things take a twist when she gains the (unwanted) affection of the JTP.
- Shoddy Knockoff Product: Beverly ends up in trouble when a dog steals the Cabbage Patch Kid while she's "babysitting", and tries to replace it with one of these.
- Shout-Out: To Say Anything..., when every member of the JTP ends up falling for Erica and stands in the front yard with boomboxes (save for Naked Rob who has to use a radio because Geoff stole his boombox).
