Recap / The Goldbergs S 2 E 14 Barry Goldbergs Day Off

Go To

Inspired by the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Barry fakes an illness to ditch school with Adam and Pops, but continuously runs into failure.

  • Adults Are Useless: What Barry is counting on, much like in the movie. And Murray, unsurprisingly, is fooled. However, the concierge at the fancy restaurant is quick to deny him, Adam and Pops a table despite Barry's protests, while Beverly is similarly as fast to figure out that Barry's faking his illness.
  • The Cameo: Charlie Sheen plays the role of a delinquent, just like his character in the film, and even says he feels like he's "been here for 30 [bleeped] years."
  • Celebrity Paradox: Charlie Sheen cameos as a delinquent... despite Charlie Sheen playing a delinquent in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
  • Dance Party Ending: Despite so much of the day going wrong, Barry's day ends by crashing a pep rally parade at the school to do the iconic "Twist and Shout" scene from the film, which all of the students go along with because they've also seen and enjoyed the movie.
  • Heroic BSoD: Barry after he comes to the realization that he's not like Ferris Bueller at all, but rather like his loser friend Cameron.
  • Karma Houdini: The thief posing as a valet manages to get away with stealing the Firebird as noted by Adam's narration.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Barry finds out that doing the exact same things Ferris did do not guarantee the same results as in the movie. He even gets grounded by Beverly when she finds out about it.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To Ferris Bueller's Day Off, natch.
