Recap / The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air S 1 E 25 Working It Out

Go To

Hilary quits her job to take a position as an assistant to film actress Marissa Redman (Queen Latifah). However, Marissa abuses her power over Hilary to the point of threatening to fire her if Will doesn't respond to her advances, which Will leverages to help Jazz get with Hilary.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Marissa to Will. Jazz starts out as this to Hilary as usual, but has a Pet the Dog moment later on that causes Hilary to warm up to him.
  • An Aesop: Don't let yourself be abused and degraded just to have a chance at becoming successful career-wise.
  • Age-Gap Romance: Despite being middle aged, Marissa seeks relationships with younger guys to the point of going after Will, a sophomore in high school, and loudly boasting about that fact on their date (which, if their genders were reversed, would undoubtedly look much worse than it already does).
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Jazz and Hilary leave the restaurant, Will acts like he's interested in continuing the date with Marissa...only to deny her a few seconds later.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Jazz may be dumb and have shallow affection for Hilary, but his infatuation is what results in him being the one to call out Marissa for her horrible treatment of Hilary.
  • Disposable Intern: Despite Hilary viewing her new job as an opportunity to break into the world of Hollywood, it's immediately clear the Marissa treats her as no better than this.
  • Getting the Boot: Happens to Jazz at the start of the episode per Running Gag, with Geoffrey having the honors this time around. According to Will, this is the 18th time Jazz has been thrown out on Hilary's request.
  • Horrible Hollywood: Marissa symbolizes nearly all of the unglamorous aspects of the Hollywood lifestyle.
  • I Meant to Do That: Jazz states that his frequent stops to the Banks house to woo Hilary, which all end with him getting thrown out, are All According to Plan, despite Will's obvious doubt. When things turn out well for him by the end of the episode, he cites the plan triumphantly.
  • Mean Boss: How Marissa treats Hilary, to the point of threatening to fire her if Will won't go on a date with her.
  • Pet the Dog: In contrast to his usual Butt-Monkey status, Jazz ends up getting his time to shine when he calls out Marissa for her poor treatment of Hilary, leading to Hilary giving him a kiss on the cheek at the end of the episode.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Jazz gives one to Marissa calling her out for how poorly she treats Hilary. Will is more than willing to go along with it, and it doesn't take long for Hilary to realize Jazz is right as well.
  • White-Dwarf Starlet: Despite being much older than she was during her glory days and her last six movies all bombing, Marissa has deluded herself into believing that she still has what it takes to play the star roles she used to get, and further lives in denial of her age by courting men in their twenties and even late teens.
