Tropes present in this episode:

  • Ad-Break Double-Take: Just before and just after the second commercial break, the genie asks "what is your wish, Master?" and not in a way that suggests that the genie is repeating herself.
  • Clip Show: In all of the 145 episodes produced, this was the only one to use a clip montage; it was of Hughie's past schemes, and is used to set the context for his grandest scheme yet to defraud Boss and Rosco and put Bo and Luke away for good.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Boss and Rosco, when they first lay their eyes on that intoxicatingly beautiful "genie," Trixie ... which is exactly what Hughie predicts will happen.
  • The End... Or Is It?: In the final scene, even though everyone knows the lamp is a fake Rosco rubs it anyway, and smoke starts to come out of it.
Narrator: Well, in Hazzard County, you never know.
  • Every Car Is a Pinto: When Hughie's van ends up going over a cliff (Hughie having been rescued from it) it flops down and explodes on impact.
  • Fruit Cart: A roadside seller of fresh eggs gets his barn run into by Enos as he's chasing the bad guys.
  • Hilarity Ensues: You'd think that Boss, having been the target of several of Hughie's past schemes, would have learned his lesson and not fall for the "genie" scam. Nope.
  • Hollywood Law: When Boss buys the lamp from Hughie for "everything" he has, this somehow makes Hughie the County Commissioner — an elected position. Hughie then fires Rosco as sheriff — another elected position — and places one of his mooks as sheriff. Fortunately as Boss tells Hughie, the deal isn't final until the contract gets registered in Capitol City, so Hughie goes off to Capitol City while having his sheriff and deputy arrest Boss, Rosco, and the Dukes placing them in Hazzard County jail; but if the deal isn't official then Hughie isn't commissioner and his mook isn't sheriff.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: All four Dukes close and/or block their eyes when Jesse tries to jump his pickup truck over the train.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: When Boss and Rosco are discussing an old oil lamp that Hughie left behind for Enos to guard. Rosco suggests it might be a magic lamp like the one from Aladdin.
Boss: You got to be touched in the head to believe a fairy tale like that.
    Rosco: I believe it.
    Boss: Mmm-humm.
  • Improbably Predictable: Hughie's scam works in part because he knows what Boss's first two wishes would be: The Duke Boys in his jail and a big pile of money.
  • Knockout Gas: Downplayed Trope. Hughie's goons plant a knockout gas canister into the back of the General to subdue Bo and Luke, but it's more realistically used here. It takes a few minutes to fully knock them out (possibly because the General's windows were open), it is only visible as it immediately exits the gas canister, it almost gets them killed because a half-zonked Luke briefly steers the General into oncoming traffic, and the headache takes while to dissipate.
  • Mouse Trap: Hughie put a mousetrap in his wallet pocket, knowing that his uncle Boss Hogg would try to pick his pocket when they hug.
  • Mystery Box: Hughie shows up and asks Enos to watch an important box he refuses to divulge the contents of, making Boss super curious. Boss tricks Enos into leaving the box with him and Rosco.
  • Necktie Leash: Boss drags Rosco out from the jail cell area by the necktie to keep Rosco from Saying Too Much.
  • Racing the Train: The Dukes try to get across the train tracks before the Cannonball comes though...except they're not in the General Lee, they're all in Uncle Jesse's pickup truck. Jessie jumps the train anyway.
    Daisy: Um, Uncle Jesse...
Luke: You ain't gonna try to jump it?
Jesse: Well of course I am!
Narrator: Well, if you gotta do that, it's best to be riding with the man who taught 'em how.
Fortunately Jesse manages to jump over the train just as an empty flatbed car is going by.
  • The Rich Want to Be Richer: Boss plans to buy the lamp with everything he owns, but then once he has the lamp he'll wish for all of his possesions back, followed by all of Hazzard, then all of the state, then the United States, and maybe eventually the world.
  • Schmuck Bait: Boss notices that there's an inscription on the bottom of the lamp: "Do not rub." Rosco talks Boss into trying it anyway.
  • Shout Outs: To:
    • "Aladdin": The legendary tale of the magic lamp containing a wish-granting genie, is used as the premise of Hughie Hogg's latest scheme.
    • Pinocchio: The original Disney classic, specifically Jiminy Cricket's "When You Wish Upon a Star."
  • Smoke Out: Or Smoke In in this case, as rubbing the lamp causes smoke to emit from the lamp (set up by Hughie) and during the cover the "genie" comes into the room.
  • Spanner in the Works: Hughie is well on his way to scamming Boss out of everything until the Dukes manage to break themselves out of the jail cell that Hughie had them placed in while unconscious. (The Dukes in jail being Boss's first wish.)
  • Stupidity Is the Only Option: Nobody in a million years – even the dumbest person on earth – would go along with Hughie's latest scheme, even if he's convincing and everyone plays their parts perfectly (which is exactly what happens in this well-rehearsed scheme). Nobody, that is ... except Boss and Rosco, and this is exactly what Hughie is counting on!
  • Teetering on the Edge: Hughie ends up teetering over the edge of a cliff because he has taken a road that (to quote the Narrator) "there ain't no road at the end of the road." Bo and Luke save him from falling over the edge.
  • Try and Follow: Jesse manages to jump over a moving train in order to lose Hughie's two mooks who are chasing after the Dukes.
  • Violin Scam: In this case the "magic" lamp is the violin, which Hughie sells to Boss Hogg for his entire fortune.
  • Whammy Bid: As a part of Hughie's scam to get Boss Hogg to give him everything he owns (which is basically most of Hazzard), as Boss tries to buy Hughie's "magic" lamp for $100,000 one of Hughie's accomplices calls as a man from Mexico offering one million dollars.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: About a third of the way through the episode Enos leaves the Hazzard County Sheriff's office for lunch, and never returns.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Played literally. When Hughie's two mooks are caught by the Dukes they refuse to talk, until Daisy suggests, "what about the snake pit?" Bo and Duke act like they're going to go find some rattlesnakes to put in a sack - and then the mooks start talking.
