Chapter 29: Pedal to the Meddle
Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:
- Cruel to Be Kind: Hiccup rejects Mirabel's love-confession. Not because he doesn't reciprocate her feelings, but because he thinks he's such a disappointment that he would ruin it for her anyways and that she would be better off without him.
- Curse Cut Short: Felix is about to give his opinion on the hummingbird incident, but his wife slaps her hand over his mouth when Antonio shows up.Felix: Looks like that plan went to shi—
- Disaster Dominoes: It's when Mirabel and Hiccup are on the verge of discovering their mutual feelings for each other when Augustin is suddenly attacked by bees, causing an annoyed Pepa to thunder, setting the stage on fire with a lightning bolt. Bruno tries to put it out, only to set his shoe ablaze. After Luisa and Isabela attempt and fail to fan out the fire with giant palm leaves, Felix and Camilo make Pepa (and Antonio, unwittingly) cry to summon a rainstorm to put out the flames. By the time Dolores arrives with Alma, everyone and everything is soaking wet from the downpour.
- Giftedly Bad: Bruno and Camilo's play is so bad, from its on-the-nose writing to the hokey acting, that Hiccup, Mirabel, even Augustin (who was in on the plan) leave it afraid and unnerved. The fact that they wrote it in under a day and Camilo has to play all of the parts certainly didn't help.
- Inspired by…: Bruno and Camilo's impromptu play A tale of a Griffon and a Moth was very obviously based off of Hiccup and Mirabel. Even they see the resemblance as they're seeing it.
- Internal Reveal: Mirabel is the last person to realize that her affections for Hiccup are more than just platonic.
- Maniacal Laugh: Played for Laughs. Pepa lets out one when Hiccup and Mirabel have fun on their "date".
- Never Work with Children or Animals: In-Universe. Antonio's contribution for the Madrigal's plan ends up backfiring when the hummingbirds he uses poop all over them, ruining Hiccup's ruana.
- Toilet Humor: The hummingbird incident produced a lot of crap puns from various other characters.
