Recap / The Critic S 2 E 4 From Chunk To Hunk

Go To

Jay and Marty join a weight-loss camp, and Marty loses so much weight he becomes a total stud. While Marty tries to handle the strain of being popular, Jay finds his life threatened by an actor he panned.

This episode has examples of

  • Bad "Bad Acting": Marty as Peter Pan. He fully admits he stinks and is told he was hired for his newfound good looks.
  • Big "YES!": Jay over losing two pounds at fat camp. As he says, he's back to his college weight.
  • Biting-the-Hand Humor: "Ah, yes. Sweet, non-judgmental Fox Network, where coming in third is a triumph!"
  • Delayed "Oh, Crap!": While singing campfire songs, Jay unknowingly walked into the fire. After Marty points this out, Jay gets partway into another line before screaming.
  • Epic Fail: Marty can't even do one sit-up. The gym teacher chastises this, saying even the Easter Island Kid can do one.
  • Exorcist Head: The kids at the next door Exorcism Camp naturally do this.
  • Floor Board Failure:
    • The weight-loss plot is kicked off by Jay crashing through multiple floors. Rush Limbaugh follows shortly, and both of them agree to race each other to the bottom floor this way.
    • Bill Clinton experiences similarly in the White House, landing on Socks.
  • Freudian Excuse: A hypnotism session suggests that Jay is a Big Eater because Eleanor didn't breastfeed him.
    Baby Jay: Mama! Mama!
Eleanor: [reading a parenting book] Feed him with my what? I don't even know this person.
    [Baby Jay whimpers]
  • Grass is Greener: Literally when the campers try to commune with nature. A patch of grass bemoans how another patch is greener.
  • "Hell, Yes!" Moment: As Marty is tempted to eat, he overhears an employee at an ice cream shop saying their freezer is broken and that they need someone to eat 50 gallons of ice cream. Marty immediately runs inside.
    Employee: It's Jay Sherman's kid! We're saved!
  • He Really Can Act: In-Universe, Jean Paul Le Pope reveals that despite his threat to Jay, he wasn’t going to kill him - he was just acting, proving that he had more acting skill than Jay thought.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Bill Clinton records a video for the kids about the importance of physical fitness, while pigging out on his lunch. He immediately falls through the floor.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Duke says the Floor Board Failure means he has to lose weight, Jay suggests it was shoddy workmanship that was to blame. Duke says Rush Limbaugh is three floors up without any problems, only for the radio host to suddenly fall through and crash into Jay.
  • Mood Whiplash: "Wait a minute, edible roaches don't crawl. EDIBLE ROACHES DON'T CRAWWWWLLLLLLL! Anyway..."
  • Oh, Crap!: "Oh no, he's fat again!"
  • Pet the Dog: Though the weight loss was minimal, Duke sincerely commends Jay for it. He also hires a team of bodyguards when Jean-Paul threatens Jay.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Marty loses and regains his weight.
  • That Poor Cat: "Sorry, Socks."
