Go To

Do the Fruit Shake: Carl's new song samples a singing group, but he needs their okay before it can play on the radio.

Throwing Pains: During a snow day, Ronnie Anne and her skater pals must battle for the gym space by playing dodgeball.

"Do the Fruit Shake" provides examples of:

  • Edible Theme Naming: Each of the Tropical Fruits are named after a type of tropical fruit, which is also their Trademark Favorite Food. Piña likes pineapples, Papaya likes papayas, and Maybelle (Mango) likes mangoes.
  • Food Fight: Carl and CJ's attempt to get the Tropical Fruits back together devolves into a food fight between Piña, Papaya, and Maybelle.
  • Foreshadowing: Two major hints that prove that Maybelle is Mango from the Tropical Fruits is 1) her obvious love for mangoes, and 2) she bears a close resemblance to her picture on the record sleeve.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: This episode reveals that Maybelle used to be part of a singing group called the the Tropical Fruits, where her nickname was Mango. And their record cover shows that Maybelle was quite good-looking back in the 1970's.
  • Plagiarism in Fiction: The premise of this episode is that Carl remixes a song by the Tropical Fruits, and he needs their permission to perform it on live radio.
  • Silver Fox: Although Maybelle and Papaya haven't exactly aged well since their days with the Tropical Fruits, Piña certainly has.
  • Tender Tears: After hearing about how the Tropical Fruits broke up, Bobby is moved to tears and blows his nose on Sergio, declaring that this was the "saddest story I ever heard."

"Throwing Pains" provides examples of:

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Becky makes quick work of the Skating Team once she enters the game.
  • The Dreaded: Ronnie Anne and her friends are clearly terrified of Becky, and for good reason.
  • Jerkass: The Dodgeball Team, especially their leader Dodge, aren’t exactly the most pleasant of individuals.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Happens to both the Dodgeball Team and Carl and Sergio:
    • The Dodgeball Team, who were willing to let the Skating Team out in the cold, use Becky to physically hurt them, and just being all-around unpleasant, end up getting what they deserve in the end by not only losing the game, but also having to stay in the cold until Ronnie Anne allows them to stay in the gym.
    • Carl and Sergio, who spent most of the episode sabotaging the Skating Team’s dodgeball training, end up getting pelted by water balloons, courtesy of the aforementioned Skating Team.
  • Lesbian Jock: This episode reveals that Becky is a lesbian, as she is shown to be in a relationship with a female classmate known only as "Dodge".
  • Rousing Speech: Just when the Skating Team is about to give up thinking they don’t stand a chance against Becky, Ronnie Anne gives a speech about the many times they’ve overcome adversity together, which inspires them to continue playing. This also inspires Laird to come back to the team when he initially bailed out.
