Recap / The Casagrandes S 1 E 3 New Haunts Croaked

Go To

New Haunts: Ronnie Anne forgoes a family Halloween tradition for a cool party, but learns cool doesn't always mean fun.

Croaked: Ronnie Anne and Sid teach Adelaide about the Day of the Dead to help her get over the death of her frog.

"New Haunts" contains examples of:

  • Acting Your Intellectual Age: Non-Child Prodigy example: All the sixth graders at the party act more like young adults than eleven or twelve-year-olds.
  • Disaster Dominoes: At the party, Sid high-fives Ronnie Anne, which causes the claw on her hand to fly off and land in the punch bowl. She then wheels around in shock, which causes the tail on her costume to whip around and knock the snacks on the floor. She and Ronnie Anne try to clean it up, but Sid grabs a pressurized soda bottle which pops open, with the liquid hitting Ronnie Anne in the head. And then some gumballs in her hat come loose and roll off, which causes a boy to trip and hurtle into a crowd, with one of them holding a can of spray cheese, which pops straight open and hits the ceiling fan, causing cheese to splatter all over the guests.
  • Everyone Hates Mimes: When Ronnie Anne and Sid want to get into Sameer's skateboard party, they throw away their costumes, only to find that Sameer's party discourages guests from not wearing costumes. Ronnie Anne and Sid, clad only in their turtlenecks and leggings, try to pass as mimes, only to find that people dressed as mimes aren't allowed either!
  • Funny Background Event: When Ronnie Anne and Sid arrive at the party, all of the sixth graders stop partying to look around at the two costumed girls and stare at them, except for one boy who is noticeably still jamming to a tune.
  • Halloween Episode: This is Bobby and Ronnie Anne's first Halloween in Great Lakes City.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a pun on the term "nuance".
  • Record Needle Scratch: The DJ at the party intentionally does this when she (along with most of the other sixth graders) are shocked at the fact that Ronnie Anne and Sid arrived at the party wearing costumes.
  • Shout-Out: Bobby's "Vampire Boogie" appears similar to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."
  • Spiders Are Scary: When CJ scares Carl by jumping out of a pumpkin shell, Carl gets covered in plastic spiders and freaks out.
  • Too Old to Trick-or-Treat: Not trick-or-treat per se, but Ronnie Anne bails out of Bobby's Halloween tradition, with his consent, because she and Sid want to go to a sixth-grade party. It turns out to be boring because the sixth graders think they're too old for costumes, even though both this episode and the Halloween Episode of the parent show have teenaged characters like Bobby and Lori wear costumes as well.
  • Wanting Is Better Than Having: When Ronnie Anne and Sid go to the sixth-grade party, they learn that it's not as fun as they had anticipated.
  • Younger than She Looks: Downplayed; despite being a fifth grader, Ronnie Anne is tall enough to be mistaken for a sixth grader.

"Croaked" contains examples of:

  • Dead Pet Sketch: This episode involves Sid's sister Adelaide coping with the death of her pet frog.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Ronnie Anne and Sid decided to bring a frog over to Adelaide's ofrenda so she could play with it. They didn't realize that, since Adelaide is only six, she'll think that setting up photos of people you love and admire will bring them back too, forcing them, with a little help from Tio Carlos, to show up to Adelaide in costume.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: A couple of times, when Adelaide cries, you can see green snot coming out of her nose.
  • Literal-Minded: Carl is told to scatter a path of marigold petals for his great-grandfather Lazaro to follow to his ofrenda. In many scenes, his marigold petal scattering acts as a Funny Background Event. In the end, it is revealed that Carl somehow ended up in front of the Loud House!
    • To a lesser extent, Adelaide thinks that setting up an ofrenda for a loved one on Day of the Dead will make them come back.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Ronnie Anne and Sid are like this when their ruse is revealed and Adelaide shuts herself in her bedroom to cry.
  • Ocular Gushers: Adelaide cries in this manner when she misses her pet frog.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Poor wording on the part of Ronnie Anne and Sid leads Adelaide to believe that her dead pet Froggy will really come back on Dia de los Muertos. When she finds out that this isn't the case, she's crushed.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Ronnie Anne and Sid decide to give Adelaide a new pet frog to help her get over the death of the original Froggy. Ronnie Anne even mentions that this trope still works on Bobby.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: A old photo reveals that Rosa's father Lazaro looked very much like her in life.
  • Toilet Humor: Ronnie Anne, Sid, Adelaide, and Sergio use Carlitos' dirty diaper to attract flies for Froggy to catch.
  • Totem Pole Trench: Sid and Ronnie Anne do this, first as Great-Aunt Millie, then as Mr. Woodford (who they don't realize was a poodle).
