Recap / The Casagrandes S 1 E 17 Mexican Makeover Uptown Funk

Go To

Mexican Makeover: When Mama Lupe comes to visit, Abuela tries to get her family at the top of their cultural game.

Uptown Funk: Adelaide and Carl have an adventure on Mr. Chang's route, but they must work together to save the day.

"Mexican Makeover" contains examples of:

  • Agony of the Feet: Averted; when Carlos accidentally drops some books onto Bobby's foot, Bobby's about to scream in pain before realizing that, due to the shoes he's wearing, he can't really feel anything. Carl starts stomping on Bobby's foot and asks if Bobby feels the stomping, but Bobby still doesn't feel anything.
  • Baby See, Baby Do: When Rosa tells her grandchildren to complain about their eyes in Spanish, Carlitos mimics her.
  • Cool Old Lady: The episode ends as Mama Lupe takes it upon herself to teach her great-grandchildren some Mexican traditions, including having a hot-sauce-drinking contest with CJ and having a lucha libre fight with Carl (and winning).
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: We get one of Mama Lupe's feet as Bobby removes her shoes with a rope.
  • Hollywood Heart Attack: Mama Lupe has one when she sees that the Casagrandes have ordered fast-food tacos. Her heart is restored to health when she learns that the Casagrandes only became over-the-top traditional Mexicans so as to not disappoint her.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Frida when her mural on the history of Mexico gets melted by the hot sauce.
  • Manchild: Bobby mistakes the spurs on his boots for spinning toys and immediately starts playing with them.
  • Ow, My Body Part!: Carlota, CJ, Carl, and Bobby scream, "Ow, my eye!" after Ronnie Anne accidentally spits hot sauce on their eyes. Rosa tells them to complain about it in Spanish ("¡Ay, mi ojo!"), which Carlitos mimics.
  • Shot in the Ass: Carl, courtesy of Rosa. And since she's wielding a sticker gun and has already shot several items in the apartment with labels of their Spanish translations, that means Carl's chonie-covered right butt cheek gets a label reading "pompis".
  • Unaffected by Spice: CJ and Carlitos are the only Casagrandes who have a high tolerance for spice. Even Mama Lupe finds the extra-spicy enchiladas Ronnie Anne and Carlota made too spicy for her.

"Uptown Funk" contains examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Carl and Adelaide.
  • Dodgy Toupee: This episode reveals that Vito wears a toupee, to the amusement of his dogs.
  • Forbidden Fruit: Mr. Chang tells Carl not to touch anything on the control panel... then Carl is tempted to push some buttons. He ends up turning on the air conditioner and freezing the tourists. It gets worse from there.
  • From Bad to Worse: First, Carl turns on the AC so the train gets really cold. Then he turns on some loud music, speeds up the train, and it ends up going express!
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Carl and Adelaide argue with one another while pretending that they're married and raising Froggy II as their child.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: All three sumo wrestlers do this when Froggy II starts jumping on them.
  • Stiff Upper Lip: The British tourist apologizes before throwing this trope out the window upon seeing Froggy II in his teacup.
  • Tempting Fate: Adelaide offers to play El Falcón de Fuego with Carl. Carl accepts the idea only to find that Adelaide has tied him to a toy train track. She then pours water and drops ice on him.
