Recap / The Batman S 4 E 2 Team Penguin

Go To

Penguin assembles an all-star team of Gotham's most dangerous villains to take down Batman. Meanwhile, Batgirl and Robin try to work together for the first time.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • An Aesop: About teamwork. Amusingly, it's Penguin's efforts to invoke this for the villains that triggers the heroes to learn it.
  • The Bus Came Back: Bane makes an appearance in this episode after having not appeared since "Traction", his debut episode.
  • Character Development:
    • Barbara is much less impetuous and follows Batman's lead. It's one of the things that Bruce points out when saying that Robin can't go Leeroy Jenkins in a fight.
    • Bruce finally trusts Barbara enough to reveal his secret identity to her and let her train in the cave. Batgirl pointing out that Robin has his trust must have sunk in a lot.
  • Continuity Nod: Barbara remembers suspecting that Bruce Wayne is Batman "A Dark Knight To Remember", but she concluded he isn’t Batman as Bruce had amnesia at the time and forgot he was Batman. When Bruce brings her to the Batcave for the first time, and finally reveals his identity, she says "I knew it".
  • Deducing the Secret Identity: Upon seeing that Batman is Bruce Wayne, Barbara is able to connect that Robin is Dick Grayson, recognizing him as the orphan Bruce recently took in.
  • Egocentric Team Naming: Penguin named his supervillain team “Team Penguin”, and he refuses to use a different name.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When circumstances lead the team to believe that Killer Moth died from exposure to toxic fumes, Killer Croc sounds genuinely remorseful that his teammate was killed in such a gruesome manner, and he's disgusted by Penguin's callous disregard for their fallen comrade.
  • Foreshadowing: Firefly notes how the exposure to the toxic fumes presumably killed Killer Moth, before he is revealed to have mutated. This turns out to be the fate of Firefly himself in the episode White Heat.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare/Took a Level in Badass: Killer Moth becomes this after transforming to a moth mutant by the chemicals.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Batgirl feels this since it took a long time for her to join Batman, but Robin became his sidekick in what could be a short amount of time. With that said, Batman feels it's time to make her official.
  • Internal Reveal: Batman fully lets Batgirl into the loop by taking her to the Batcave and revealing his (and by extension Robin’s) secret identity to her. He then also tells Robin who she is, much to her annoyance.
  • Mirror Reveal: When Killer Moth first emerges from his pupa as a mutant moth, he initially thinks everyone's staring at him because there's something on his face. He then looks at his face in a window, and is shocked to see what he's become.
  • Running Gag: Every time Penguin mentions how far the group of villains, Team Penguin, is going to go, one of his associates suggests a catchier and cooler name of their own, only for Penguin to shut down the suggestion with a huff.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Batgirl acts smug by withholding who she is, that is until Batman reveals her identity, much to Robin's amusement.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Batman finally lets Batgirl into the Batcave and reveals his secret identity to her. She is very pleased by this and happily trains with Robin.
  • Villain Team-Up: The main focus of the episode, wherein Penguin forms a team consisting of himself, Firefly, Ragdoll, Killer Croc, and newcomer Killer Moth.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Batgirl and Robin both compliment and criticize each other on how the battle went. Batman is actually very amused to see them acting Like Brother and Sister.
  • Who's Laughing Now?: When Killer Moth comes to join Team Penguin, Killer Croc threatens him and Firefly and Ragdoll mock him. After he gets turned into a huge monster, he laughs and tells them with a smug look that he thinks he’s going to start getting some respect.
