After Elizabeth and Philip deliver Gabriel the virus sample they took from William's body, Gabriel gives them a new assignment. The Centre has been hearing rumors the U.S. is planning to contaminate grain they're shipping to the Soviet Union as a way of starving the country, and they also believe Alexei's work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture is involved with that. Elizabeth and a couple of agents follow Alexei to Illinois, and she breaks into an enclosed farm of wheat, which has bugs swarming around it (Elizabeth has to shower later to get all of the bugs off of her body).
Oleg meets with Col. Anatoli Victorovich (Oleg Stefan), his new boss, who tells him his assignment is to investigate stores with the highest quality of food to figure out who's been bribing the Soviet government. Meanwhile, back in the U.S., Wolfe arranges a meeting between Stan and a CIA agent, who wants Stan to blackmail Oleg so he can be turned. Stan, however, refuses, and tries to get the Deputy Attorney General to stop the CIA from doing this, which doesn't work. Stan also arranges for an agent inside the Soviet Union to get a message to Oleg about this.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth and Philip continue to worry about Paige seeing Matthew (though Paige insists she won't tell him anything), Paige continues to have nightmares about Elizabeth killing a mugger in front of her (and Elizabeth continues to teach Paige self-defense; she also teaches Paige how to keep her emotions in check), Pascha continues to argue with his parents about living in America, and Stan introduces Philip to Renee (Laurie Holden), the woman he had told Philip about.
This episode contains examples of:
- Best Friends-in-Law: Stan tells Philip he's happy about Matthew and Paige being together, clearly hoping this will come to pass, though he's worried about Paige being moody which will become important later.
- Call-Back: Paige tells Matthew she had a crush on him when they first met.
- Everyone Has Standards: Stan refuses to try and blackmail Oleg, considering it a betrayal of how Oleg gave the FBI the information they needed to arrest William.
- Pragmatic Evil: Oddly enough, Elizabeth; when Philip wonders if they should just kill Alexei to prevent him and others from contaminating the grain shipments, Elizabeth points out they still need to figure out what exactly he's doing.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Stan tries to use this to get the CIA to back off Oleg. It doesn't work.
