Recap / The Americans S 3 E 1 EST Men

Go To

Elizabeth meets with a women CIA agent who, upset with how she' been treated at the agency, gives Elizabeth the name of all the people in the CIA working on Afghanistan. However, the woman feels remorse about this, so she calls her superiors. Elizabeth, who senses a trap when the women tries to get her to stay, leaves, but Agent Gaad and Agent Aderholt (Brandon J. Dirden) manage to catch up to her. Elizabeth manages to beat them up and escape, but she's beaten pretty badly as well, and loses the list she got. Philip gets Annelise to see Yousaf again so he can give her the names of the CIA agents working on operations in Afghanistan. Annelise and Yousaf have sex, but she lets slip the fact someone is listening in on them, leading Yousaf to choke her to death. Philip comes in after this happens, and tells Yousaf he's there to help.

Elizabeth and Philip meet with Gabriel (Frank Langella), who's returned to be their handler. They're both happy to see him, but Philip is less happy when Gabriel asks about Paige and the possibility she might be recruited, and Elizabeth seems open to the idea. Philip accuses Elizabeth of assessing Paige, which she denies.

Elsewhere, Philip and Stan go to an EST meeting, run by Lawrence (Scott William Winters) to see what the fuss is all about, and are not impressed.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Brutal Honesty: Averted and then played straight. When Stan tells Sandra he went to an EST meeting, she asks what he thought, and at first, Stan lies and says he thought it interesting, which, to Sandra, sounds like him being afraid to admit the truth as usual, at which point Stan admits he thought the whole thing was ridiculous.
  • Call-Back: We first heard about Gabriel in "Gregory", when Elizabeth told Philip Claudia was Gabriel's replacement.
  • Continuity Nod: Nina has been convicted of espionage and treason; Gaad breaks the news to Stan, while Arkady discusses it with Oleg - Oleg is upset about it, but Arkady points out she had two meetings with Stan she didn't report on.
  • Cut Himself Shaving: When Philip and Stan get home from their EST meeting, they find Elizabeth looking beat up. She claims she hurt it unloading groceries. Stan seems to buy it, but Philip knows better.
  • Flashback: Elizabeth remembers teaching a young Paige how to swim by throwing her into the pool.
  • Foreshadowing: Elizabeth and Philip's disagreement over Paige being recruited by the Centre becomes important over the course of the season.
    • Gabriel gives Elizabeth another tape from her mother, and finds out she's dying, which becomes important later.
    • Stan and the rest of the FBI get briefed about a Soviet defector named Zinaida, who becomes important throughout the season.
    • Elizabeth's injuries will become important for the next few episodes.
  • Historical Domain Character: When Paige is channel surfing, she comes upon a news report on the death of Leonid Brezhnev.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: After the EST meeting, Philip and Stan mock the idea of "non-experience" that Lawrence talked about, and Stan says to Philip, "Let's get a non-beer."
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: Lev Gorn (Arkady), Costa Ronin (Oleg), and Richard Thomas (Gaad).
  • Saying Too Much: When the Rezidentura staff are discussing the war in Afghanistan, Oleg says the only way the war will end well is if the Soviets pull out. After the meeting, Arkady warns Oleg not to say too much about the war in front of Tatiana (Vera Cherny), a new member of the Rezidentura staff, as she'll be reporting on him.
  • Shout-Out: While channel-surfing, Henry and Paige find a commercial starring Jason Alexander. Paige ends up watching an episode of The Jeffersons.
    • "Clark" and Martha have sex using a position they learned from the Kama Sutra.
  • Wham Shot: Yousaf choking Annelise to death.
