Recap / The Americans S 2 E 13 Echo

Go To

Elizabeth gets a message from the Centre that Larrick has come back to the U.S., so, fearing for her family's safety, she and Philip take Paige and Henry on a road trip near where Jared is staying. While Philip meets with the people who are planning to exfiltrate Jared to another country, Elizabeth goes to get Jared. However, Larrick, who followed them, ambushes Philip, and then Elizabeth and Jared. While Larrick plans to turn Elizabeth and Philip in, Jared, who had a gun, shoots Larrick, and Philip manages to finish him off. However, Larrick manages to shoot Jared in the throat. Before he dies, Jared tells a startled Elizabeth and Philip he was the one who killed his parents and sister, and Kate, on behalf of the Centre, recruited him. Later, when Elizabeth and Philip meet up with Claudia, she tells them the Centre wants to recruit second-generation illegals, and they want Paige to be part of that. Philip is absolutely opposed to this, but Elizabeth isn't so sure.

Fred gets on to the factory floor, and gets the paint samples Elizabeth and Philip wanted, but he gets nervous, runs, and is shot, which ends up killing him. Elizabeth and Philip are able to get the samples where Fred left them before he died.

While Stan records the information on the Echo computer program, he ultimately can't bring himself to betray his country, even for Nina, and sends a note that reads, "Tell Nina I'm sorry." Nina, to Stan and Oleg's sorrow, gets sent back to Moscow.

Elsewhere, Paige goes to the anti-nuclear protest, where Pastor Tim gets arrested.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Actual Pacifist: Pastor Tim is this, and Paige gushes about what he did to the point it's clear she thinks he's a Badass Pacifist.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Literally; the gun Larrick takes from Elizabeth, and puts behind him under his jacket, is the gun Philip shoots him with when Elizabeth is able to knock Larrick towards the car trunk Philip is lying in.
  • Continuity Nod: Martha continues to press "Clark" about having children, and Stan and Sandra continue to be distant from one another.
  • Dead Drop: Stan leaves his message for Arkady about Nina underneath a bench slat, where another man picks it up for Arkady.
  • Dream Sequence: Stan dreams he's in the office, where he sees Vlad and Sandra having sex on top of Agent Gaad's desk while naked, and behind him, Martha stealing files from the Mail Robot. Stan's unconscious suspicions of Martha will become important later.
  • Foreshadowing: The Centre's plans for Paige (which is based on fact) become important throughout the rest of the series.
  • In the Back: Even though Philip is handcuffed and inside a car trunk, when Larrick is knocked into the car trunk, Philip is able to pull the gun from under Larrick's jacket and shoots Larrick in the back.
  • Let Them Die Happy: Though Elizabeth is able to promise Jared as he's dying she'll tell the Centre Jared helped save them by shooting Larrick, she's too stunned by the rest of Jared's confesesion (see The Reveal below) to make that promise for anything else.
  • Papa Wolf: While in disguise, Philip meets up with Arkady at a bookstore newsstand, and tells him in no uncertain terms that if the Centre approaches Paige without his or Elizabeth's permission or knowledge, the two of them will quit working for the Centre forever.
  • Protest by Obstruction: While Paige and others march outside one of the nuclear power plants, Pastor Tim and a few others chain themselves to the gates in front of the plant, which leads to them getting arrested.
  • The Reveal: Jared admits to Elizabeth and Philip not only that he killed his parents, and that he was being recruited as a second-generation illegal, but he and Kate were having an affair, and he killed his parents when they found out about him and Kate. He admits he was wrong to kill his sister Amelia, but she was going to go to the police.
  • Spy Speak: Elizabeth calls with an emergency signal for "Clark" by pretending to be "Jennifer", and telling "Clark" their Uncle Drew has gone missing.
    • Later, when Philip meets the couple who are planning on taking Jared, they pretend to be lost, and he pretends to be giving them directions.
  • Suspiciously Apropos Music: When Elizabeth and Philip are driving to pick up the shoes Fred left them before the police can find them (which is intercut with Paige at the protest), Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone", a song which was written as a Shout-Out to The Bourne Identity novel (though this is a case of Tropes Are Tools, as it ends up working for the scene).
