In this third flashback episode to how the Watterson kids were born, we go back to when Anais was born and how her evil antics had Gumball and Darwin running scared.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Innocence: Anais' murderous tendencies seem to simply be from having natural intelligence but none of the maturity to see others' lives as valuable.
  • Ambiguous Syntax: Richard read a bunch of "baby books" to prepare for Anais' birth—by which he means books to be read to babies.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When discussing the perks of having a baby sister, Darwin mentions it would make playing "Knights and Princesses" better. Cut to them playing the game... as the princesses waiting around for help and not the knights.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Gumball and Darwin "save" Anais and she seems to have let go of attacking her brothers. However, that still doesn't stop her from getting them in trouble.
  • Bowdlerization: Cartoon Network's Middle East/North Africa channel cuts the following:
    • The Imagine Spot of Gumball and Darwin dressed up as princesses and standing on top of a toy castle after saying that, with a baby sister, they'll be able to play "Knights and Princesses" with more people.
    • The imagine spots of Gumball and Darwin marrying babies, then being cared for by their adult wives in their old age.
    • The brief shot of Gumball disrobing before he enters the boiling-hot bathtub.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Nicole and Richard are never looking at their kids during Anais' very overt attempts to kill her brothers—only when Anais manipulates things to make it look like she's being bullied.
  • Do Wrong, Right: Anais writes "No one loves you. — Gumball and Darwin" on her crib, and Gumball says he would "never write something like that". She then erases the first part and rewrites it as "Nowon luves u.", which Gumball agrees is more accurate.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Anais' first action upon seeing Gumball and Darwin after being born? Shove them out of the car, into a patch of wet cement.
  • External Combustion: Darwin's toy car detonates when he has another toy get inside it.
  • Flashback Twist: Darwin and Gumball talk about how having a baby sister would improve their games of Knights and Princesses. Cut to the two of them both dressed as princesses, standing on a castle prop as nothing happens.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Gumball pushes a box he believes to contain Anais, before being crushed himself. He quickly recovers, but is surprised he survived.
  • Infant Sibling Jealousy: Inverted and invoked. Gumball and Darwin are ecstatic to have a baby sister, but Anais hated them from the moment she was born because she wanted their parents' undivided attention. She even frames Darwin and Gumball for vandalizing her crib, making Nicole and Richard think they're the jealous ones.
Nicole: Look, I understand—you're no longer the babies of the house, and that's a big adjustment. It was difficult for your father, as well.
(Richard looks downward with Puppy-Dog Eyes)
Nicole: But just because there's a new baby in the house doesn't mean I'll love you any less.
Gumball: So, you mean love multiplies?
Nicole: No, it divides. But I'll take the difference from your dad's portion and hope our marriage survives until you go to college.
    Richard: Mm-hmm... wait, what?
  • Karma Houdini: Anais suffers absolutely no repercussions for trying to kill her brothers.
  • Nightmare Face: Turns out Anais did this a lot back in her infancy, usually when she's gonna do something nefarious to Gumball and/or Darwin.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Although Gumball and Darwin were ecstatic to find Anais safe and sound at the dump, they had no way of knowing she was seconds away from shoving them into the incinerator before they turned around.
  • Nightmare Fuel Coloring Book: Anais shows her brothers a crayon drawing of her with Nicole and Richard. When her brothers ask where they are, she unfolds the paper to show their skeletons buried in the dirt.
  • Origins Episode: We see when Anais came into the family.
  • Love Redeems: Anais eventually changes her mind about killing her brothers after seeing how they still loved her and risked their lives to save her. She still uses her first words ("Gumball did it.") to get them in trouble.
  • Remembered I Could Fly: Darwin wakes to find Anais covered the fishbowl he sleeps in and acts as if he's drowning. Then he remembers he can breathe underwater and realizes it's more of an annoyance.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sibling Murder: Anais made numerous attempts to murder her brothers, apparently from a primal desire to eliminate competition.
  • Squashed Flat: Gumball pushes a box he thinks contains Anais out of the way of a press, then gets crushed himself. He then gets up flat as a pancake and pops back to normal.
Gumball: I guess there is an advantage to being 2-D.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The episode begins with a "four years ago" subtitle, and stays there up to the end credits.
  • Wife Husbandry: When they were six and eight, Darwin and Gumball imagined marrying future friends of their little sister. Their Imagine Spot has the age difference exaggerated to the point the wives are still babies during the wedding, and adults by the time the husbands are elderlynote .
  • Winged Soul Flies Off at Death: After Anais inexplicably puts her brothers in front of a truck while their eyes were closed, Darwin's soul starts floating off until his body grabs it and pulls it back in. Gumball, who was offscreen, implies something slightly different happened to him.
    Darwin: That was terrifying.
Gumball: Yeah, well, at least your soul was going upwards.
  • Your Television Hates You: When the Watterson brothers get home after Anais pushes them out of the car, they see the TV showing footage of an newly hatched eagle pushing the other eggs out of their nest. When Gumball claims all babies are innocent, the narrator refutes his exact words while citing (offscreen) footage of sharks devouring each other in utero.
