Recap / The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3 Ninja Koopas

Go To

The first episode of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

King Koopa uses his ninja wand to turn Kooky, Bully, Big Mouth, and Cheatsy into giant ninjas to capture Prince Hugo the Huge, the prince of Giant Land, so he can turn him into a miniature poodle. After the Koopas hold Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad prisoner in the cage of Prince Hugo's pet parrot, it's up to Mario to rescue his friends and foil Koopa's plan.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Bowser uses his Ninja wand to make Kooky, Bully, Big Mouth, and Cheatsy gigantic so they can wreak havoc in Giant Land.
  • Birdcaged: The heroes, sans Mario, are held captive inside the birdcage of Prince Hugo's pet parrot. This being Giant Land, the cage is more than large enough to fit all three of them.
  • Dangled by a Giant: The giant Big Mouth grabs Raccoon Luigi by his tail,, which causes him to power down. After this, Big Mouth dangles Luigi by his overalls.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: This series mostly does away with the parody format of Super Show for more game-loyal plots, with only briefer and more sporadic shout-outs. This episode, however, brings back Koopa's affinity for pop-culture based evil schemes. No guesses what it references.
  • Forced Transformation: Koopa uses his poodle wand to turn Prince Hugo into a miniature poodle.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Mario refers to King Koopa as "Bowser Koopa" when he tells him he won't get away with his evil plan, much to the shock of the Koopa Kids.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Koopa's plan goes sour in a heartbeat when he accidentally turns Mario into a giant (thanks in part to Mario switching the wands behind his back).
  • Shout-Out:
    • This episode's title is a reference to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. At one point, Big mouth says, "I love being a Koopa!"
    • At one point, Prince Hugo's parrot mentions having a poster of Big Bird in his cage.
  • Sinister Sentient Sun: When Mario fails to catch Luigi, he says "Couldn't see you, the Sun was in my eyes." Upon hearing this, the Angry Sun says "I was not!" and tries to attack them.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: After Mario and his friends defeat the Koopa Kids and foil Koopa's plan, Koopa escapes through a warp pipe. The Koopa Kids follow behind him, not wanting to be left behind.
