Recap / The Addams Family S 1 E 34 The Winning Of Morticia Addams

Go To

Uncle Fester reads something disturbing in a magazine — couples with apparently happy marriages really hide a mass of turmoil and unhealthiness. To protect his niece and nephew, Fester tries to provoke Gomez and Morticia into fighting with each other, culminating in bringing in a marriage counselor.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • The Casanova: Dr. Chalon has been married and divorced multiple times. He only agrees to make a house call when Fester offhandedly mentions Morticia's loveliness, and he wastes no time flirting with her after arriving.
  • Feud Episode: Uncle Fester tries to make Gomez and Morticia fight, and even enlists Grandmama, Lurch, and Thing. They mess with a chess game in progress and try to convince each person that the other is cheating and Fester claims Morticia called Zen Yogi (which Gomez highly enjoys) quackery. None of it works.
  • For Your Own Good: When enlisting other members of the family, Fester asks who's willing to upset Morticia and Gomez for their own good. Lurch, Thing, and Grandmama all raise their hands.
  • Karma Houdini: While he had good intentions, Uncle Fester essentially causes all the trouble in the episode one way or another by meddling with Gomez and Morticia's marriage. He never gets punished for it.
  • Oblivious to His Own Description: Fester reads part of the upsetting article aloud, saying Dr. Chalon claims that the husbands and wives who appear to have the happiest marriages are really miserable. Morticia, in the middle of flirting with Gomez, expresses pity for the unfortunate couples.
  • Seduction-Proof Marriage: Dr. Chalon tries to put the moves on Morticia, but when she realizes what he's doing goes beyond friendliness, she sharply reminds him that she's married.
