Recap / The A Team S 3 E 2 The Bend In The River Part I

Go To

The team goes to the Amazon river basin in Peru to rescue Tawnya's fiancee, Brian Lefcourt, who has been taken captive by the river pirate El Cajón while searching for the lost native American city of Del Rio. The secret to all of this lies somewhere beyond the bend in the river but no one will take them there for fear of the pirate. They steal a boat from one Bobbi Cardina, the only person who is for some reason allowed to go around the bend. With Bobbi's help, they get the drop on El Cajón and demand that he hand over Brian Lefcourt... but things don't go exactly according to plan.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch Character Intro: El Cajón switches it twice in rapid succession. The episode begins with the natives telling Brian all about the myth of the pirate who walks on one leg, and how utterly terrifying he is. They even demand that Brian "give his hand to save us" by which they mean literally cut off his own hand and offer it as a gift in exchange for their lives. El Cajón shows up, chases away the natives, and takes Brian captive, at which point he's revealed to be an illiterate Fat Slob. He also speaks affably with his captive, saying he won't hurt him, he only terrorizes the natives so they'll be too scared to defy him and force him to do something really evil, and he definitely has no intention of cutting off Brian's hand. A moment later, after leaving Brian with his other captives, he goes back to his hut. He finds one of his people there digging through his chest of treasures, at which point he reveals he has a shotgun hidden in his prosthetic leg, and his other followers drag the man away to be killed. This establishes him as a Faux Affably Evil villain who really is a dangerous and cunning individual in spite of his shortcomings.
  • Cliffhanger: Since it is a two-parter. The episode ends with the Team getting the drop on El Cajón, and demanding he bring in The Man Behind the Man Señor Doyle, only to have the tables turned when Doyle shows up, and it turns out that Bobbi pulled the firing pins out of their rifles.
  • Foreign Cuss Word: After the team steals Bobbi Cardina's boat, she lambasts them for it, repeatedly calling them querido. Subverted, as querido actually just means "dear". When Doyle slaps Bobbi Cardina at the end, El Cajón calls the man a caballo but that just means "horse".
  • Gold Digger: Face accuses Tawnya of being this when she mentions that she's engaged to her wealthy editor. She isn't happy about the insinuation.
  • I Am the Noun: El Cajón is Spanish for "the coffin." The team brings along a real coffin and works it into their plan specifically for the Irony.
  • Le Film Artistique: Murdock's quirk of the week is carrying around a film lens and pretending he's shooting one of these, all while speaking in a phony French accent and making crazy demands of those around him.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Doyle is this to El Cajón - a wealthy foreign investor doing some unknown thing past the bend in the river, and paying the river pirate to keep people away from whatever that thing is.
  • The Mole: Bobbi helps the team out and acts friendly toward them... then she pulls the firing pins out of their rifles when their backs are turned.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: El Cajón is Spanish for "the coffin." He's a river pirate who certainly has no problem putting people in coffins.
  • Never Learned to Read: El Cajón pretends to read Brian's notebook after capturing him, but from his comments it's obvious he doesn't actually know what it says. He seems to be under the impression that it's all about Brian's sexual conquests.
  • Phony Psychic: Many of the myths of El Cajón come from a local villager, Little John's brother-in-law, who is seen as a Magical Native American by his people. Brian points out that the man isn't a psychic, he just chews coca leaves and hallucinates.
  • Ruthless Modern Pirates: El Cajón and his crew of pirates operate on the Amazon river, capturing people on the river and selling them into slavery.
  • Shrouded in Myth: El Cajón is this to the locals. They say he walks with one foot off the ground. He casts no shadow, Death follows him like a silent friend. He keeps a cobra and moccasin around his neck, and is fine because they both fear to bite him. In reality, he's a Fat Slob and not very bright either. The part about him walking with one leg off the ground is actually true, though, because his left leg is a wooden prosthetic.
  • Stomach of Holding: Local river guide Little John demands Brian's St. Christopher medal in exchange for taking him past the bend at the beginning. Little John's brother-in-law swallows the medal to keep it safe.
  • Title Drop: Finding out what's going on beyond the bend in the river is the driving force of the story, and naturally the phrase is said numerous times.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: invoked Hannibal, as usual. He talks about it with his director, David.
David: Where the hell did you get that?! We're not doing Macbeth here. We're making a cheese sandwich horror movie!
Hannibal: That doesn't mean it can't be performed well.
