Bellamy must venture out into enemy territory with an unlikely companion. Meanwhile, Octavia is forced to confront her past.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Black-and-Gray Morality: Indra points out that, from a certain perspective, what the Primes do isn't really any more brutal than enforcing a one-child only policy on the Ark and floating people who broke the rules, or forcing children to fight for the death to be Commander.
  • Call-Back:
    • In Octavia's drug-induced hallucination, when Blodreina declares that Pike will be sentenced to death for his crimes against Wonkru, the dialogue is very similar to when Pike executed Lincoln. In addition, a flashback to Lincoln's death is shown, highlighting the similarity.
    • Josephine gives a hilariously truncated summary of Bellamy and Clarke's relationship over the last five seasons, recapping their multiple mutual betrayals and bonding over horrific events, and concluding that the entire thing sounds "exhausting, frankly." Bellamy mutters "tell me about it."
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Much of Bellamy and Josie's conversations through the episode count, including him asking her about her relationship with Gabriel and her trying to figure out his relationship with Clarke.
  • Cool Bike: Clarke steals Jade's and, thanks to Josephine's mind, knows how to drive it.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Honorable mention to Clarke, who manages to do it in Morse code.
Josephine: I've been in love with Gabriel for 236 years. The last 70 of which, he's been trying to kill me. You know, relationships. [looks down at her finger, which is tapping] Morse code, huh? She's crafty, I'll give her that. [translating taps] B-O-O-H-O-O. That's harsh.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Kane appears as himself in Abby's eyes (goodbye, Henry Ian Cusick!) to explain his decision, and he is peaceful and calm as the airlock opens.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Abby sobs as Kane says goodbye to her.
  • Killed Off for Real: May we meet again, Marcus Kane.
  • Mirror Match: Octavia vs Blodreina as the latter is an Octavia without much moral restraint.
  • Not So Stoic: Indra is clearly fighting back tears as she recites the Ark's farewell and opens the airlock on Kane.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Josie relinquishes control to Clarke momentarily because the Children of Gabriel are about to behead her because she knows Clarke has better fighting skills than herself, and she will regain control when Clarke falls asleep, not because it's the right thing to do.
  • Redemption Quest: Octavia acknowledges aloud that this, not just forgiveness, is what she's after.
  • Scar Survey: Inverted, Kane looks at his new body and notes all the scars that he now doesn't have.
  • Ship Tease: Josephine definitely doesn't buy that Bellamy and Clarke are platonic.
Josephine: I don't know what they taught you on that hunk of metal you grew up on, but where I'm from, when someone tells you you're in danger, you listen.
Bellamy: Yeah, we do that, too. Unless the people we care about are in trouble, then we do what has to be done.
Josephine: The people you care about are in trouble. I guess you just care about her more.
    • After Bellamy asks about Josephine's relationship with Gabriel, she flips it around to probe his relationship with Clarke.
