Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 3 E 6 Race With The Demon

Go To

A maniac is terrorizing the roads around the Turtles' farmhouse, and it's up to Donatello and Casey Jones to stop him.

  • Actor Allusion: When Donnie is possessed by Speed Demon, his transformation seems to allude to another time that Rob Paulsen played a manic, chaotic being with a giant green head.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Casey and Donnie, though moreso Casey since Donnie gets possessed by Speed Demon.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At first it seems as if the driver is the mutant, but as it turns out, it's the car.
  • Body Horror: Whoever the Speed Demon controls is horribly twisted when it happens. Donnie's is much worse than a random human's though.
  • Car Fu: How the group ultimately stop the car when Leo uses the van to ram it off a cliff.
  • Continuity Nod: Donatello and Casey modify a car using the Kraang ship they found in "Buried Secrets".
  • Cool Car: The "Turtle Racer," a restored Hot Rod rebuilt by Casey and Donnie utilizing Kraang tech.
  • Demonic Possession: The Speed Demon does this to Donatello and it is not pretty.
  • Drives Like Crazy: The Speed Demon and Casey Jones
  • Every Car Is a Pinto: The Party Wagon blindsides Speed Demon to send it over the cliff, after which it explodes in midair.
  • Evil Makes You Monstrous: What Speed Demon does to its original driver and Donnie when he's controlling them.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Speed Demon is finally knocked off the road, Donnie goes to confront the driver, only to discover he's just an ordinary human who's more than a little freaked out about what's happening. Donnie then puts it together:
Donnie: You're not a mutant? Well, if he's not the mutant, then that means the-
(turns around to see the car behind him and pop it's own hood to reveal a mouth full of teeth and flesh)
  • For the Evulz: Speed Demon doesn't have any reason for bumping other cars off the road.
  • Foreshadowing: You can vaguely see under the car that it looks more organic and flesh-like, a hint that the car itself is the mutant.
  • Invincible Classic Car: The Party Wagon takes an incredible amount of punishment this episode without so much as a dented fender to show for it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Casey's refusal to let Donnie drive the party wagon during the grocery store trips is to prevent other drivers from seeing him and not raising suspicions.
  • Outside Ride: Donnie briefly rides atop the Speed Demon's roof.
  • Monster of the Week: The sixth consecutive one.
  • My Brain Is Big: Dr. Cluckingsworth, M.D. is a barnyard chicken who gains an extremely oversized brain after ingesting mutagenic gasoline.
  • Mythology Gag: Donnie and Casey building a new car while trash talking each other is taken straight out of the first TMNT movie.
  • Nitro Boost: The Turtle Racer is equipped with one powered by "highly-volatile radioactive mutagen eggs."
  • Shout-Out: When the car possess Donnie, he's looks like something from an old CARToons magazine cover (and they even did some TMNT art).
    • At first it looks like the car is the one from Duel, but with the villain inside the protagonist's vehicle instead... turns out it's actually more like Christine.
  • Temporarily a Villain: Donnie when he's controlled by Speed Demon.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: Promotional materials, particularly at comic book conventions, spoil that Speed Demon is the car, and not the driver, and that Donatello gets possessed by it.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Donnie and Casey are portrayed along these lines in this episode. They're still sniping at each other and fighting for April's affections, but Donatello willingly helps Casey Jones create a souped up car to fight Speed Demon no strings attached, Casey calls Donatello his friend whilst trying to free him from Speed Demon, and the two even ignore April to talk about how awesome Casey defeating Speed Demon was. It may actually be the friendliest interaction they've had since they've met each other.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Casey wanting to get revenge on Speed Demon at the beginning can come across as this since April and Donnie are in the party wagon with him, thus putting them in harm's way. Though this later makes him a Well-Intentioned Extremist since he wants to stop Speed Demon from hurting other people.
