Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S03E06 "The Old Switcheroo"

Go To

While engaged in battle, a mishap results in Splinter and Shredder switching minds. Can Splinter in Shredder's body find a way to switch their mind backs before Shredder in Splinter's body takes advantage of this switcheroo to destroy the Turtles once and for all?

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: April can't help but snicker at Bebop and Rocksteady's incompetent antics, especially when they drop a heavy crate onto Shredder's foot (and his subsequent reaction).
  • Cassandra Truth: Splinter in Shredder's body went to the Turtles for help in getting back to his real body. However, due to being trapped in Shredder's body, Splinter was about to be attack by the Turtles as he tried to get them to understand that he isn't who they think he is. Seeing that they don't believe him, Splinter reminded the Turtles what he always taught them about looking for the truth and was willing to let them do with him as they will if they still didn't believe him. Hearing his words and noticing that he would't fight back, the Turtles were convinced that the Shredder in front of them is really Splinter but trapped inside their enemies body.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: The Turtles and Krang realized that something was off with Splinter and Shredder when they notice that they weren't acting the way they usually do, due to being unaware of the mind switch. However, Krang ends up shrugging off his suspicious while the Turtles go the surface for answers, which led to them to finding out the truth.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: This happens with Shredder and Splinter due to the machine's ray switching their minds.
  • Heroic Willpower: Sprinter, while trapped inside Shredder's body, used his willpower to control his brainwaves so Krang would't discover him, which worked.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: While in Splinter's body, Shredder eats some of the turtles' pizza when they have their lunch, much to their suprise as the know their master usually detests pizza. Also, Splinter in Shredder's body was acting nice to Bebop, Rocksteady and Krang but tried to hide it so he would't be discovered. Although Krang does briefly become suspicious when Bebop and Rocksteady mentioned that Shredder was hit by a ray.
  • Papa Wolf: The reason why Splinter tagged along with the turtles on their initial mission. After Donatello's Automatic Pizza Maker malfunctions and explodes, a piece of it hits Leonardo's arm, giving him a bruise, which Splinter notices. Out of concern for Leo's health, he opts to join them.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When Krang learns that Shredder had been hit by a mysterious laser, he's quick to attribute this to his unusual behavior and has his brain scanned to be certain his ally hasn't been compromised.
  • Villain Ball: Shredder, while in Splinter's body, does not bother hiding his sadistic pleasure in bullying the Turtles. Immediately after being questioned by the Turtles why he's acting strange (eating pizza despite that Splinter usually hates pizza), Shredder forces them to do multiple exercises and humiliating chores around the lair as punishment for being invasive. The Turtles begin to get more suspicious when "Splinter" manages to subdue the Turtles in a training exercise with ease, and in a style that does not at all resemble Splinter's fighting style. Finally, when April comes over to visit, Shredder rudely dismisses her, which manages to get over to the Turtles that something is wrong with "Splinter" and thus they (and April) return to the surface for some answers.
  • Voices Are Mental: Splinter and Shredder talk with their real voices in thought.
  • Voices Are Not Mental: Splinter and Shredder speak with the body that they swap with out loud, which makes their respective friends confused about the mind swap.
