This episode provides examples of:
- A Day in the Limelight: Hook Foot normally is a very minor character, but this episode revolves almost entirely about him.
- All Webbed Up: The fishmen have a twist on this with their coral grenades, which explode into coral that immobilizes anyone caught in the blast.
- Becoming the Mask: Originally Seraphina hits on Hook Foot and gives him a necklace to keep a stolen pearl off her hands until the heat dies down, but eventually she really falls for him.
- Beauty Equals Goodness: Subverted. The evil-looking fishmen appear to be the villains at first, but are actually law enforcement officers that are trying to capture the beautiful Seraphina for stealing a priceless artifact.
- Be Yourself: Rapunzel advises to Hook Foot to "just be yourself" when he is nervous about his date with Seraphina. It works, as they have a nice date and she really falls for him.
- Both Sides Have a Point: Eugene admits that Rapunzel is right, that love sometimes has a way of happening on its own. While Rapunzel admits that Eugene is right, the love is something you need to work at sometimes.
- Destruction Equals Off-Switch: Subverted. Cassandra cuts a coral grenade in half and praises herself for seemingly disabling it, only for the halves to detonate anyway and capture Eugene and Lance.
- Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Hook Foot when he's explains his "non-date" dinner with Seraphina.Hook Foot: No, it's not a date. We're just gettin' together to eat and, you know, uh, talk, and, uh....... Wait! I have a date!
- Good Is Not Nice: The fishmen are hostile towards the heroes, considering them expendable in apprehending Seraphina. And would have killed them without a second thought if not for Seraphina surrendering herself to spare them.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Seraphina gives herself up to the fishmen so they will leave Hook Foot and his friends alone.
- Hostage for MacGuffin: As part of her Heroic Sacrifice, Seraphina threatens to destroy the stolen artifact if the fishmen don't agree to her terms.
- Shout-Out: The title of this episode is one to There's Something About Mary.
- Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Hook Foot doesn't mention his date is a mermaid. When Rapunzel makes a point of how unusual that is, Hook Foot points out that Rapunzel has 70 feet of hair.Seraphina: And you don't see me staring.
