Recap / Tales of the Walking Dead S01 E05 "Davon"

Go To

Season 1, Episode 5

Davon finds himself on the run in Maine while trying to piece together how he got here.

  • Ambiguously Evil: The community is implied to be some sort of evil cult by Arnaud and Amanda, as part of their motivation to kill their children is to prevent them from having to do terrible things to survive as well as things they’re ordered to do. They certainly are quick to come up with a very medieval way of killing Davon and later go through with it for Arnaud, but they are visibly stunned and remorseful to learn that they nearly killed Davon for nothing. The episode ends without any confirmation on whether or not they’re actually evil, but Davon is repulsed by their bloodlust enough to swear them off.
  • Continuity Nod: Davon has a card with the letters “PPP” on it. In Season 7’s “Swear” on the original show, Tara found a card just like it where Heath was last seen.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The predominantly white mob in New England condemning Davon, a black man, to a terrible death for a crime with little to no chance to protect himself is uncomfortably similar to lynch mobs. The parallel is pronounced especially due to Davon earlier alluding to the terrors British colonialism inflicted on people of African descent after Amanda referenced their conflict with the French centuries ago.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Nora’s rage and heartbreak over Davon’s supposed betrayal is heartrending.
  • Facial Horror: Half of Amanda’s face was dipped into acid enough to seep through and kill her.
  • Florence Nightingale Effect: Davon and Nora fell for each other after the latter treated his leg and oversaw his recovery.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Davon accidentally killed Amanda, and Amanda's son, who was in on her scheme to kill children, lied that it was a murder in cold blood to get him executed.
  • In Medias Res: The episode opens with Davon in the middle of the woods being hunted by a group of people, handcuffed to a walker.
  • Karmic Death: Arnaud is devoured by the walkers of the children he killed.
  • Mercy Kill: How Amanda and Arnaud justified killing children, saying that they're sparing them from living in such a Crapsack World.
  • Mood Whiplash: Davon and Nora’s cute, romantic scene together is followed up by a violent mob led by Nora demanding his death.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Davon clears his name and allows the community to get closure and justice, but it’s cold comfort considering they were going to coldly execute him for a crime they couldn’t prove, including the woman he was falling in love with. Arnaud’s execution only brings him pain, as he is disgusted by the community’s heartless ways.
  • Ship Sinking: Nora and Davon’s blossoming romance is destroyed when Arnaud frames the latter for Amanda’s death. Even though Nora does try to stop the execution to try to save Garen, her participation in it beforehand and her initiating the brutal execution of Arnaud confirms that their chances are shot as Davon leaves, disgusted.
  • Spiteful Spit: Nora spits on Davon when he seemingly refuses to confess to the supposed murder of Amanda.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Amanda killed a child and was prepared to kill her own nephew Garen as well.
