Recap / Tale Spin Pizza Pie In The Sky

Go To

The fifty-second episode of TaleSpin.

Rebecca leaves Baloo in charge of Higher for Hire while she attends the Better Business seminar. During this time, Baloo gets the idea to turn Louie's nightclub into a pizza delivery service so that he can use the Sea Duck to deliver pizzas.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Anchovies Are Abhorrent: Louie mentions to Baloo and Kit that he hates anchovies, but unfortunately doesn't get to explain why to them. When Baloo and Kit have to find some anchovies for Louie's pizza delivery business, they get irregular ones from Bob's Discount Fish Market. Just one whiff of them makes Louie severely ill. Rebecca, on the other hand, loves anchovies and sure enough, the pizza with anchovies is to be delivered to her.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Baloo and Kit's first customer is Nanook, a polar bear who wants a large pizza with anchovies, refuses to pay unless his demands are met, and beats Baloo up if they aren't.
  • Borrowed Without Permission: Baloo borrows a dollar from Rebecca's safe to pay for the anchovies for Louie's pizza. When Kit witnesses this, he asks Baloo if it's stealing, to which Baloo tells him that he's just borrowing without telling Rebecca. Baloo ends up with just one dollar left after the Health Inspector takes the remaining 499 to pay for Baloo's health and safety violations.
  • Bowdlerise: The Toon Disney broadcast of this episode cuts out a scene where a delusional Louie holds the Health Inspector by his necktie and visualizes him as an anchovy, likely because Disney didn't want kids choking adults or other kids with a tie like a noose, which was what the shot implied.
  • Closest Thing We Got: When Baloo tries to deliver a pizza to a polar bear named Nanook, Nanook complains that he forgot the anchovies. Upon hearing this, Baloo uses a net to catch a fish from the water and put it on Nanook's pizza. Nanook accepts this in a heartbeat, but unfortunately, an orca jumps out of the water and eats the pizza.
  • Emergency Cargo Dump: To get out of the volcano after cooking the pizzas, Kit dumps an ice cube out of the Sea Duck, creating steam to propel the Duck up.
  • "Eureka!" Moment:
    • When Louie serves Baloo a pizza, Baloo says that it's too bad that people have to fly all the way to his nightclub just to get it, then he gets the idea to turn Louie's into an airborne pizza delivery service.
    • After getting the pizzas made, Kits says they don't have enough time to cook them, and it's too bad they can't cook and deliver them at the same time.
  • A Fool and His New Money Are Soon Parted: The money Baloo earns for his pizza delivery is just enough to pay for all the health and safety violations he racks up while running the operation.
  • Here We Go Again!: This episode ends with Rebecca getting the idea to turn Higher For Hire into a pizza delivery service after having pizza for lunch at the Better Business Seminar. Baloo and Kit faint upon hearing this.
  • Kids Driving Cars: Kit, a twelve-year-old bear cub, drives a steamroller to flatten the pizza dough.
  • Lava Pot Volcano: This episode has Baloo team up with Louie to run a pizza delivery service, using the Sea Duck as a flying kitchen. When Baloo loses the pizza oven out the loading ramp, he decides to cook the pizzas by flying around in an active volcano's caldera, depicted as a rocky bowl filled with a large lake of molten rock. Baloo and Kit survive the process with ice blocks tied to their heads. Convection, Schmonvection proves highly arbitrary, as the volcano's heat does indeed cook the pizzas, but doesn't make the Sea Duck's hull sizzling hot, overheat its engines, nor set ablaze its tanks of aviation fuel. Toon Physics at their finest.
  • Punny Name: The Better Business Seminar Rebecca attends is held in a hotel called the Takeover Hostel.
  • Restaurant-Owning Episode: Baloo and Kit decide to turn Louie's nightclub into a pizza air delivery business called Pizza Pie in the Sky. The business gets an order for 200 pizzas, one of which has anchovies. When the irregular anchovies that Baloo and Kit get make Louie sick, Baloo and Kit are left to try and make the pizzas themselves. In the end, it is revealed that the delivery was for the Better Business seminar that Rebecca was attending, and Rebecca was the one who ordered the anchovy pizza. Baloo and Kit make $500.00 from the delivery, but are forced to pay $499.00 worth of fines to the Health Inspector for all the health and safety violations they racked up.
  • Rhyming Title: Pizza Pie in the Sky.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: After all their trials and turbulations, Baloo and Kit have nothing to show for all their hard work as they lose all but one dollar from their $500 pizza delivery, which they have to return to the petty cash supply. Meanwhile Rebecca comes out of the Better Business Seminar with only the idea to set up a pizza delivery business, which the boys came up with independent of her. No one accomplishes anything in this episode.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Louie is usually an active and healthy guy, until he's exposed to his one weakness, anchovies, and instantly becomes sick and delusional.
