Recap / TPF: Louder and Prouder S1 E8 "Home School"

Go To

Penny learns that her snarky Sadist Teacher, Miss Hill, lives in the school as she's homeless. After Dijonay leaks the secret, which causes her to get fired, Penny decides to house her teacher, which proves to be a real challenge. Meanwhile, Zoey becomes drum major and enlists Bobby's help in teaching her the ways of the funk.

  • Before My Time: When Uncle Bobby first introduces Bobby Brown’s "My Prerogative" to her, Zoey initially thinks its a Britney Spears song, as she did a cover of it in 2004.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Do NOT refer to "My Prerogative" as a Britney Spears song in front of Bobby. He will remind you that's Bobby Brown's first and foremost.
    • You can disrespect Oscar’s family, but disrespect his snacks and that’s where he draws the line.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: With regards to Dijonay snitching on Ms. Hill to get her fired, Dijonay points out that, aside from the fact that her family had heavy lunch debts, Ms. Hill brought it on herself with her nasty attitude, which emotionally scarred Dijonay. Penny and the others however, think it was cold of Dijonay to not only violate her promise of secrecy, but also get her fired for financial benefits, with Penny pointing out that Ms. Hill is homeless and doesn’t have a bed to sleep on. As we do see, Ms. Hill does have her issues, from being homeless to her relationship with Bobby having fallen apart, but it ultimately didn’t excuse her behavior as she still acted nasty to the Prouds even when they let her stay.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Once again, Dijonay fails to keep her promise not to tell a secret, this time about Ms. Hill being homeless, though Dijonay has her reasons.
  • Company Cross References: KG is seen playing a game that is extremely reminescent of Kingdom Hearts, with wallpapers on his other monitors that resemble Destiny Islands.
  • Dating What Mommy Hates: Bobby renounces Suga Mama for a life with Miss Hill, something he should have done back in high school.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Miss Hill affects the mannerisms of a hip friend or family member, but they're only a thin veneer that covers educational corruption at its worst incarnate in one woman.
  • Given Name Reveal: Principal Hightower’s first name is revealed to be Rhonda.
  • Human Knot: When learning how to learn dance moves as a drum major dancing to Bobby Brown’s "My Prerogative", Zoey gets her legs twisted up, and has her body tied up in a ball.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Dijonay justifies whistleblowing on Ms. Hill by the fact that her family racked up a huge lunch debt that she took advantage of the school's "Snitches Get Riches" program to get it cleared.
  • Like Parent, Like Spouse: Uncle Bobby runs off with Lisa Hill at the end of the episode, renouncing Suga Mama as too controlling. Thing is, Ms. Hill is just as controlling, but unlike Suga Mama she pushes Bobby towards independence instead of coddling.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Penny's stealth suit invokes this via "Glam Mode", which is actually the default mode, and it really shows off Penny's shapely, attractive figure.
  • My Beloved Smother: Suga Mama doesn't like Ms. Hill because she was Uncle Bobby's prom date and ruined his night. Ms. Hill shoots back it was because Suga Mama was there smothering him, which Oscar corroborates because Bobby doesn't even know how to use a knife in the present. Bobby also agrees and happily elopes with Ms. Hill.
  • Plot Hole: It's never explained how Dijonay even got her hands on photos of Ms. Hill crashing in the teacher's lounge, especially when Penny didn't do anything more than just show Dijonay the photos from her own phone.
  • Pretender Diss: Bobby irks up at Zoey calling "My Prerogative" a Britney Spears song, showing he clearly doesn't like that she covered it.
  • Rags to Riches: Thanks to Penny's fundraising, Ms. Hill goes from homeless to having one million dollars (minus 15 percent for hosting fees, so 850,000).
  • Sadist Teacher: Downplayed with Miss Hill, who hides her cruelty with snark.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: A feature of the super suit that Penny orders online. It allows her to take on the characteristics of a tarantula, a pillbug, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson.
