Recap / Superman And Lois S 3 E 8 Guess Who's Coming To Dinner

Go To

Chrissy and Clark dig into Mannheim and Peia's past.

Tropes:

  • Big Damn Heroes: Superman arrives just in time to take a blow from Peia that was meant to kill John.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Peia at the beginning of the episode, which almost causes Bruno to cancel the dinner.
  • Booked Full of Mooks: When John Henry arrives at the Little Aces to confront Bruno, he promptly discovers that everyone else in the restaurant — diners and staff alike — are Bruno's mooks.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Not heard, but clearly seen in the final montage between Matteo and Bruno.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: Jordan tries to be discreet when he saves the man from the burning building and smothers the fire. However, while he mostly got the first part right, Kyle is catching on to the presence of a metahuman because the ice left behind by Jordan's freeze breath is an obvious giveaway.
  • Everyone Has Standards: While Lois wants to bring down Bruno, she is not okay with publishing a piece on his personal life, especially due to Peia being a fellow cancer patient.
  • Eye Awaken: The final shot is of a significantly-improved Bizarro. As the camera focuses on his face, his eyes open.
  • Framing the Guilty Party: After Peia killed Moxie, she used her powers to fake a call from Lex confessing to the murder, knowing the line was tapped. This removed Lex Luthor from Metropolis' criminal underworld so she and Bruno could take over. Lois even laments that they helped send a man to prison for a crime he didn't commit, even though Luthor is hardly an innocent.
  • Internal Reveal: All over the place.
    • John Henry finds out Mannheim and Peia are Matteo's parents.
    • Bruno himself finds out John Henry is Nat's father.
    • Clark and Lois learn that Peia is Onomatopoeia.
  • Made of Iron: John Henry endures a severe beating from Mannheim and some mooks at the restaurant. Later in the episode, he is seen speaking with Nat and there is barely any evidence of injury. Maybe his battle suit also provides healing capabilities, and/or the DOD has some kind of advanced healing tech?
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jordan saving a man and leaving him at Jon's feet puts the latter's job in jeopardy, as Kyle thinks he rushed into the building himself against orders.
  • Oh, Crap!: John Henry learns from Darlene that the version of him on this Earth often went to meet Mannheim at the same restaurant where Nat is having dinner with Matteo's parents, and John quickly puts two and two together. When John Henry confronts Mannheim there a short time later, it leads into a second one when everyone at the restaurant is revealed to be a mook; among the people pointing guns at John Henry are a female customer and two tuxedoed waiters.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Both Clark and Sam note how unlike her usual self Lois is being when she speaks about being done with Mannheim. Sam's prodding eventually gets back to her old self.
  • Pet the Dog: Though he intends to beat John Henry to death, Bruno has Nat and Matteo escorted out first and seemingly has no intention of harming her. He even lets John leave with Nat after Peia is taken to the hospital.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Having tickets for a The Cure concert she was supposed to attend with Kyle, Lana invites Sarah to join her; Sarah has no idea who they are. Later, though, Jordan introduces her to some of their music, and she's surprised to discover that a) she loves it and b) her mother's musical tastes are apparently darker than she expected.
  • Power Incontinence: Peia momentarily loses control of her powers at dinner, causing her to vibrate slightly and shake the table.
  • Rage Breaking Point: When Jon confronts Jordan about intervening in the fire and putting his job in jeopardy, the latter blows up at the former about how he has powers and his brother doesn't. He quickly comes to regret it.
  • Save the Villain: With Bruno's approval, Superman takes Peia to a doctor after she collapses.
  • Shipper on Deck: Lois is all for her dad going on dates again.
  • Silence Is Golden:
    • The beginning of the episode has Lois silently dealing with the effects of chemo while Jon, Jordan, and Clark set up her desk and a spare bed on the first floor so she won't have to climb the stairs.
    • The episode ends with another silent track as Matteo confronts his father, Kyle muses over the evidence of Jordan's superheroics, and finally Bizarro waking up.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: After the confrontation, John Henry forbids his daughter from ever seeing Matteo again.
  • Wham Shot: Bizarro appears at the end of the episode. His corpse looks much healthier than his previous appearances, as if his kryptonite addiction never got as far as it did, then he wakes up.
  • White Sheep: Matteo was completely unaware that his parents were criminals until John Henry intervened in dinner.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Peia manages to hold down both John Henry and Superman with a sustained scream, but she ultimately can't keep it up in her condition and collapses.
