Miyafuji tries mingling with the enlisted men, only to be chewed out and informed by Commander Wilcke that any unnecessary contact between men and witch is strictly prohibited. After a tough fight against a Neuroi, Wilcke finds herself in the ruins of Calais where she recalls her past with her lover Kurt Flachfeld who was left behind and killed after the evacuation of essential personnel from continental Europe as a part of Operation Dynamo.


Tropes in this episode:

  • Glamorous Wartime Singer: What Minna was going to be prior recognizing her potential as a witch. She does perform at the end of the episode.
  • Lady in Red: Minna wears a beautiful, full-length red ballgown during her performance of Lili Marleen.
  • The Lost Lenore: Kurt is this for Minna.
  • Love Letter: Yoshika seemingly gets one from a seaman stationed on the Akagi. Or at least Bishop and her seem to think so. Minna grabs it and confiscates it before they can read it.
  • Men Are the Expendable Gender: Of sorts. As a witch, Minna is a high priority target to evacuate which is why she gets out and Kurt as a regular enlisted man gets left behind.
  • Oh, Crap!: Sakamoto and Minna when fragments from the destroyed Neuroi pierce the former's shield.
  • Re-Release Soundtrack: Due to copyright concerns regarding the German song "Lili Marleen", the North American releases have replaced this song with "Negai no Tomoshibi"note .
  • Wham Line: "When I lost him, I was certain the ache in my heart would never stop hurting. To shelter myself from future anguish, I swore I'd never love anyone. But I was wrong... Even now I'm afraid of losing someone, so I have to make sure that never happens again!" Followed by...
