Recap / Star Wars: The Bad Batch S3E8 "Bad Territory"

Go To

Desperate for intel, Hunter and Wrecker track down a dangerous bounty hunter. Meanwhile, Omega tries to help Crosshair in his recovery.

Tropes:

  • Action Film, Quiet Drama Scene: The tense, action-packed bounty hunt of Fennec, Hunter, and Wrecker is interspersed with peaceful scenes on Pabu, where Omega tries to help Crosshair through his physical and possible psychological issues.
  • Bad Boss: Fennec isn't the best leader to Hunter and Wrecker, openly telling them they're her first and primary line of defense (which is a nice way of saying they're basically cannon fodder) and talking down to them the entire time. What's worse is that even though she assures the Batch she can be trusted, by the episode's end it looks like she's selling them out to someone looking for them.
  • The Bus Came Back: Fennec Shand returns for the first time since Season 1's "Bounty Lost".
  • Call-Back: Omega repeats her previous assertion that Phee is a "liberator of rare and ancient artifacts". At Crosshair's expression, however, she admits that Phee is just a pirate.
  • Call-Forward: Fennec insists towards the middle of the episode that she'll honor the deal she makes with Hunter and Wrecker, calling to when she would steadfastly assure Din Djarin that she wouldn't leave his side during the shootout on Tython in "The Tragedy".
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Phee is shown lamenting the loss of Tech's brilliant mind. In the previous season, she displayed romantic interest in him, so that's definitely not the only reason she misses him.
    • Fennec previously tangled with the Bad Batch in "Cornered" when the Batch foiled her attempt to kidnap Omega, and in "Bounty Lost" when she fought Cad Bane over Omega and ultimately left her with the Batch per Nala Se's instructions.
    • Omega tries to teach Crosshair meditation as Gungi and the Wookiees showed her in "Tribe".
    • Sylar has a bounty on his head for double-crossing and stealing a sizable cache of credits from his higher-ups in the Haxion Brood crime syndicate.
  • Death World: Veelo, the planet Fennec tracks Sylar to, is incredibly dangerous, between air that's fatally toxic to humans and swamplands swarming with crocodile-like creatures called gryzards.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Though she doesn't care who pays her, Fennec has enough of a moral code by this point to acknowledge there are genuine "bad" guys out there. Compare that to her rival Cad Bane, who's openly and happily bad and even joked that stealing children seemed like too small a crime for the likes of Palpatine.
  • Exact Words:
    • Fennec promised Hunter and Wrecker information about the Empire's interest in M-counts; she never said she actually had the information they wanted, and once they've helped her snag Sylar, she promises to get the intel to them once she's dropped him off.
    • Fennec also said she would put Hunter and Wrecker in contact with another bounty hunter who knew about the M-count bounties. At the end of the episode, she did just that by selling out Hunter and Wrecker to that bounty hunter to ensure they come into contact with each other.
  • Got Volunteered: Crosshair is randomly volun-told into babysitting Omega due to the danger she’s in. However, this served as a convenient excuse so that Omega can convince Crosshair to get his hand checked.
  • I Want Them Alive!: When she sends Hunter and Wrecker after Sylar, Fennec is insistent that she wants him alive. That said, the clones have a much harder time subduing Sylar than they do trying not to accidentally kill him.
  • Insectoid Aliens: Sylar Saris is a man-sized, praying mantis-like alien that is supposedly a Yam'rii subspecies that can spit acid out of their mouths.
  • Kick the Dog: Fennec is clearly aware of Omega's recent capture and needles Hunter about it, explaining how her client assumed Omega was safe with the Batch and how that obviously didn't pan out.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Sylar, Fennec's target, proves fast enough to run circles around his enemies, as well as strong enough to outfight Hunter, and durable enough to withstand attacks from Wrecker and to require multiple stun blasts to lose consciousness. Once they finally subdue him, Wrecker admits that he understands why Fennec wanted help to take him down.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • Thanks to his stint with the Empire, Crosshair needs to be told who Phee is, that the Batch once tangled with Fennec Shand, and that Omega has been to Kashyyyk.
    • Both Fennec and Hunter and Wrecker keep secrets from the other party during their team-up; Fennec keeps quiet on the identity of her previous client (Nala Se), while Hunter and Wrecker carefully avoid mentioning Omega's current status.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: Fennec, Hunter, and Wrecker get attacked by a swarm of crocodilian reptiles called gryzards in the swamp.
  • Noodle Incident: When getting transport for herself, Wrecker and Hunter, Fennec asks the droids to make sure the boat doesn't capsize "unlike last time", which are the only details from that job she gives.
  • Only in It for the Money: The Batch and Fennec discuss this. Fennec says she doesn't care if she's being paid by good or bad guys, it only matters if she's paid. Hunter tries telling her that money isn't everything, but Fennec scoffs back that he only says that as someone without money.
  • Out of Focus: Echo is completely absent in this episode.
  • Rule of Three: Crosshair asks Omega three times about the Batch's past encounters and acquaintances.
  • The Smart Guy: Discussed. Phee says the loss of Tech has left them without his vast repertoire of expertise and skills. AZI is at least present to serve as the team's medic, due to him having years of expertise taking care of the clones.
  • Therapy Is for the Weak: AZI makes a preliminary diagnosis that Crosshair's hand tremors are likely psychological. Crosshair rejects AZI's offer of therapy upon being asked to elaborate what happened on Tantiss.
  • Touché: When Crosshair expresses doubt that he'll like Omega's planned therapy, Omega reminds Crosshair that he doesn't like anything, which Crosshair concedes as true.
  • The Worf Effect: Fennec's latest mark, Sylar Saris, is formidable enough that even she's been unable to bring him in without a crew.
