Star decides to liberate Ms. Skullnick's class hamster out of sheer boredom, leading to some hard time in detention. It's not going to be all sleeping and wall staring, however, as she is "elected" as Mayor of Detention and needs to satisfy the demands of her new public.

Tropes:

  • Acting Unnatural: Marco tries to act like nothing's wrong to Jackie when his arm is stuck in a pipe, making himself stand upside-down in an attempt to look casual.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Janna tries to distract Ms. Skullnick with a "snake-in-a-can-of-potato-chips" prank involving an actual snake. Skullnick takes a long time deliberating whether to eat the chips or not until she is distracted by the crowd gathering around Marco and leaves it unopened. Much later, after she has recovered Marisol the hamster and decides to feed it, she opens the can, releasing the snake. This gives Star and Janna the opportunity to sneak back into detention hall, though they also have to prevent the snake from eating Marisol.
  • Comedic Sociopathy:
    • The school janitor keeps track of how many kids slip on his wet floor.
    • Star summons a rocket launcher when Janna says they need to get rid of Ms. Skullnick. Janna settles for scaring her off.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When the fireman pulls out a metal saw to free Marco from the rainspout, he asks if it's safe. She replies "Yeah, I'll be fine!"
  • Continuity Nod: Skullnick is seen wearing the troll armor and battleaxe she picked up in "Interdimensional Field Trip".
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode mostly focuses on Janna.
  • Detention Episode: Star is thrown into detention for releasing the class hamster. There, she is elected "Mayor" of detention and sets to work fulfilling the requests of the other students there. Most are easy; the last one, batteries for a TV remote, requires her to leave the room and sneak around the school.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Star is dumbstruck when she tries to ask Oskar for some batteries, forcing Janna to do the talking.
  • Flipping the Table: Janna flips a desk in detention to demonstrate anarchy to Star, in order to guilt trip her into staying.
  • Forgot About His Powers: It didn't seem to occur to Star that she could've just used her wand to feed power into the remote's batteries.
  • The Freelance Shame Squad: After Marco gets his arm stuck in a drain pipe, he attracts a horde of gawking students who stop and take pictures.
  • Free the Frogs: A variant; Star is sent to detention for releasing the class hamster Marisol because it was as bored in class as she is.
  • Given Name Reveal:
    • The chubby Goth girl's name is revealed to be Ingrid.
    • Ms. Skullnick's first name is revealed to be Margaret.
  • Glass Smack and Slide: Star tries to free the class hamster by tossing it out the window... except she forgot to open it first. Hence, the little critter smacks flat against the glass, before sliding down.
  • Gratuitous German: Ingrid speaks in German due to Rule of Funny.
  • Greeting Gesture Confusion: Janna offers Star a fist-bump, but Star doesn't recognize the gesture and shakes Janna's closed fist instead.
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: Marco gets his hand stuck on a drain pipe trying to retrieve the hamster.
  • Hidden Depths: When not teasing Marco, Janna proves herself as quite a Guile Hero in aiding the fellow kids in detention. For this reason, Star makes her Deputy Mayor.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Given that Marisol gets stuck in a tiny pipe and nearly eaten by a snake, Ms. Skullnick is quite right to call out Star for recklessly freeing the class pet.
  • Male Gaze: An involuntary one on Marco's part when he sees Jackie walking toward him while his arm is stuck in a drainage pipe trying to get Marisol.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: Oskar is willing to lend Star and Janna his spare batteries, but first they have to find which of the dozens of keytars in the trunk of his car they're in.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Ingrid wants a guillotine so she can use it on her teddy bear.
  • Noodle Incident: Aside from Star, we never learn why the other kids are in detention.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Janna and Star blend in with the marching band by having Janna ride on Star's shoulders while holding a trash can lid.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Subverted. Star's initial reaction to being sent to detention is to use her wand to create a hole in the wall and just walk out. Janna tricks her into staying by "electing" her as Mayor of Detention.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Star insists that Janna let her do the talking, since she's got Oskar wrapped around her finger. Star takes one look at Oskar and is dumbstruck with lust.
    • After the firemen cut free Marco from the drain pipe, he declares "Now I don't have to look like an idiot anymore!" Marco doesn't even get to finish his sentence before the weight of the pipe still stuck to his arm makes him trip and fall on his face.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: While sneaking around outside of the detention room, Star and Janna encounter Ms. Skullnick having lunch and need to deal with her so they don't get caught. Star's initial solution is to summon her "Shimmering Destructo Cannon", a rocket launcher with a number of extra weapon attatchments.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After the firemen cut him free, Marco isn't seen again for the rest of the episode.
