Recap / Squirrel Boy S 1 E 10 Harried Treasure The Rod Squad

Go To

Air date: September 22, 2006

"Harried Treasure": Rodney and Andy find a map to buried treasure, but together, they must team up with Kyle and Salty Mike to dig it up from Mr. Johnson's new lawn.

"The Rod Squad": Leon and Darlene join Rodney's "Rod Squad" to suit up and prevent Andy from getting in trouble with Mrs. Johnson, at the same time trying to retrieve some stolen cinnamon buns, but they figure out that Rodney was the one who stole them.

"Harried Treasure" contains examples of:

  • Abusive Dad: While Andy did deserve punishment for demolishing Mr. J's new lawn, the number of blades that had to be polished would have cost him, Rodney, Kyle, and Salty Mike their whole energy and caused them to suffer from sleep deprivation. (On a side note, Kyle and Salty Mike aren't even his children/pets, meaning he has no right to punish them.)
Rodney: We don't have to polish every blade of grass, do we?
    Mr. J: Every blade!
  • All for Nothing: The boys wasted their time digging up Mr. J's lawn to unearth the treasure chest, only to find Captain Puffy and a bunch of cereal boxes in the chest instead of the promised loot.
  • All Take and No Give: Kyle and Salty Mike eat all the seafood logs without saving any for Andy and Rodney.
  • An Aesop: Don't damage others' property in pursuit of something trivial, especially if they worked really hard on making it.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The ending is happy on Mr. J's part since he gets to relax on a lawn chair while watching them suffer, but a real shame on the boys' part since they're forced to polish and reconstruct every blade from the lawn in the hot sun, clearly sweating and deprived of their energy.
  • Continuity Nod: When Mr. J unexpectedly awakens Andy and Rodney, a startled Rodney utters "The hat sells the sandwich".
  • Expy: Puffy Pirate Shirt Puffs cereal and its mascot, Captain Puffy, may be ones of Captain Crunch and its mascot of the same name.
  • Idiot Ball: Andy - while usually having common sense - does not recognize his own house on the treasure map, even with two magnifying glasses, but Rodney on the other hand does. He also doesn't seem to care about how wrecking the lawn will affect Mr. J (well, he does at first, but then recklessly goes along with it for whatever reason). This trope is actually zig-zagged here, as Andy (despite not being able to recognize his own house on the map) at first acts as the voice of reason by calling out Rodney for wanting to dig the lawn up and then he goes along with digging it up.
  • Jerkass Ball: Andy holds it in this episode as he inconsiderately digs his dad's brand new lawn up for treasure (he did feel reluctant about it at first, but chose to roll with it anyway) when he knows how important the new lawn is to him. He also seems pretty greedy about the treasure, as he impulsively knocks Captain Puffy over to get to it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: As punishment for demolishing his new lawn, Mr. J forces Andy, Rodney, Kyle, and Salty Mike to polish and reconstruct every blade of grass that came with it.
  • Loophole Abuse: Kyle bites the chest's lock instead of using a key.
Kyle: Keys are for losers, LOSER!
  • Only Sane Man: Subverted with Andy; at first, he acts as the voice of reason when he calls out Rodney for wanting to dig Mr. J's lawn up for treasure, but then he recklessly goes along with it.
  • Running Gag:
    • Kyle saying "x is/are for losers, LOSER!"
    • Andy wearing a beard as his means of getting Rodney, Kyle, and Salty Mike to cooperate.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Mr. J, while usually being the show's uber-unlucky punching bag, gets a happy ending here. Admittedly, he did suffer the misfortune of having his brand new lawn destroyed, but he gets to sit back and watch Andy, Rodney, Kyle, and Salty Mike reconstruct it.
  • Treasure Hunt Episode: Andy, Rodney, Kyle, and Salty Mike dig up the lawn to find the buried treasure promised by the Puffy Pirate Shirt Puffs cereal.

"The Rod Squad" contains examples of:

  • Balloon Belly: Rodney gets an enlarged belly after eating a dozen boxes of Sticky Buns.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Had Rodney confessed to eating all the Sticky Buns, the plot could have been avoided. But of course, this is Rodney, so he doesn't.
Rodney: Okay, obviously taking responsibility for my actions is out of the question. But I can't let Andy get blamed either! Oh, what a quandary!
  • Free-Range Children: Andy is seen riding his bike in the city in the middle of the night with no parental supervision, which should be concerning to his parents, considering he's only 9. However, the entire episode was All Just a Dream.
  • Impossibly Delicious Food: Apparently Sticky Buns are really good.
Rodney: This is, without a doubt, the tastiest, yummiest, deliciousest, Sticky Bun I've ever eaten... since the last one.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rodney may have used Andy's shirt to wipe off the gooey remains from the Sticky Buns, but he at least tried to prevent Andy from getting blamed for something he didn't do.
  • Never My Fault: Rodney doesn't take the fall for eating all the Sticky Buns.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: It's implied at the end that the whole episode was a dream, as Rodney wakes up from a nap and is surrounded in the living room by all the characters who appeared in the preceding events of the episode.
  • Out of Focus: Andy only appears in and plays an important role in the climax.
  • Shout-Out: The episode is a parody of the ABC crime drama series The Mod Squad, with Rodney playing the role of Michael, Leon playing Clarence, and Darlene playing Peggy.
