Recap / SPY×FAMILY - Manga: Secret Police Arc

Go To

WISE and Twilight's greatest enemy, the Secret Police of Ostania, begins making waves near the Forger Family. At the same time, Yor's brother finds out about her marriage and plans to visit the family.

Tropes about Secret Police Arc:

  • Diplomatic Cover Spy: Yuri is a subversion. While he's using the cover identity of foreign service personnel to hide his intelligence activity, Yuri's role involves domestic counter-espionage, and thus does not need any diplomatic privilages—he stays in Ostania all the time to the point of having to make up the Hugaria cover story that got Loid suspicious.
  • Dramatic Irony: Loid regrets suspecting Yor due to her association with Yuri and ends up destroying the bug... not knowing Yor is actually an assassin.
  • Epic Fail: Yuri's whole mission to interrogate Loid while getting him drunk ended up royally backfiring on him - Loid finds out that he is an agent of the Secret Police as well as Yuri being unable to get a single incriminating evidence out of Loid, while he was the one who ended up getting drunk by the end of the day.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Yuri's proper introduction has him calmly interrogating a Ostanian traitor and then brutally torturing him, with him declaring all he does is for his sister's sake.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Yor forgot to tell Yuri about getting "married".
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: As Twilight and the Handler discuss Operation Strix, the Handler warns Twilight that the Ostanian counter-intelligence is "no joke," since WISE's informant at the Berlint City Hall has just been "taken out." The next scene, three SSS officers rushes into the City Hall and drag Jim Hayward away on suspicion of espionage.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Despite Yuri being fixated on his sister, he has every reason to be suspicious that Yor has been supposedly married for a year to a man he's never even met before, and Loid even agrees with him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Loid confirms that Yor really has no idea about her brother being a member of the Secret Police, the look on his face makes it clear he feels terrible for having ever suspected her. While Franky tries to assure him that he doesn't need to feel this way, since doubting people is unavoidable in their line of work, it still clearly bothers him, and Yor's Oblivious Guilt Slinging afterwards just makes him feel even worse.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Shortly after Loid confirms that Yor doesn't know about Yuri being an SSS agent, Yor meets up with him and says she's glad she married him. Already feeling immense guilt for doubting her, Loid is crushed by her words, and destroys the bug he planted on her in disgust.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Yor's utter lack of any romantic experience leaves her a sputtering, blushing mess when Loid agrees to kiss her in front of Yuri. To calm her nerves, she slams down over half a bottle of wine.
  • Police Brutality: Jim Hayward's treatment by the SSS is intended to be a specimen of the latter's modus operandi. When the First Lieutenant brings Hayward out for questioning after he's been brought away by the former (and other SSS officers), Hayward is already been badly beaten, with a blackeye, a missing tooth, and one bloody nostril; the First Lieutenant gives Hayward an extra Cigarette Burn on his hand. During the time Yuri takes over as the interrogator and lectures Hayward about the latter's issues, Yuri grabs Hayward's head and forcefully bangs it on the desk.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both Yor and Yuri can take an insane amount of punishments - a fact Loid lampshades due to Yor's upbringing. They also both get drunk very easily.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: When Yuri is on his way to the Forger apartment, Loid suggests to Yor that they could simply come clean and tell Yuri the marriage is fake, believing her brother would understand given the scrutiny unmarried women suffer in Ostania. Yor, however, refutes the idea, saying that Yuri has always been extremely sensitive, and that he wouldn't react well to learning that Yor married somebody she didn't love.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: This pretty much sums up Yuri's reaction to Yor's lame excuse as to why she kept her marriage secret (i.e. she forgot), showing that he's way past the point of making a fuss over her eccentricities.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The SSS is shown to be brutal in their conduct, but they genuinely believe in making Ostania a peaceful country.
