After Patrick gets a new pet rock, it quickly becomes the target of a rock collector.
"Pet the Rock" contains examples of:
- Bait-and-Switch: Patrick looks in an aquarium at a pet and excitedly claims he knows what he wants to get. The next scene, he's dragging a rock on a leash, since the rock was one of the decorations in the aquarium.

- Cross-Referenced Titles: The title references "Pat the Horse" from season 11 and "Pat the Dog" from season 13.
