Recap / Sonic Boom S 2 E 50 Return To Beyond The Valley Of The Cubots

Go To

The fiftieth episode of the second season of Sonic Boom.

Tails gives D-Fekt the ability to speak so that he and his friends can understand him better. This results in D-Fekt joining forces with the Cubot prototypes to take down their nemesis, Dr. Eggman.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Attack! Attack... Retreat! Retreat!: This tine from Eggman when D-Fekt has him in the claws of Obliterator Bot:
    Eggman: I'll never give up!
(D-Fekt gets Obliterator Bot's claw to squeeze Eggman.)
    Eggman: I give up!
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: When Tails sees that D-Fekt has taken over Eggman's lair and made Eggman his slave, Tails is about to teel Sonic, Knuckles, and Amy that he sort of feels bad for Eggman, but gets distracted by the lemonade that Eggman serves them.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: This line from Sonic when he tries to guess what D-Fekt is saying;
    Sonic: It's a book! It's a movie! Oh, it's a movie based on a book!
  • Continuity Nod:
    • This episode directly establishes the events of Fire & Ice as canon to the show (in fact, Word of God had already stated the game took place sometime during season two shortly before the game's release); that game was the debut of D-Fekt, a material-magnetizing robot built by Eggman who appears in this episode and plays a major role. F&I ended with Eggman deciding D-Fekt was more trouble than he was worth after he nearly got the doctor killed in his final attempt to defeat Team Sonic, dumping the robot on the gang out of gratitude for saving him. D-Fekt is first shown in the episode as having become Tails' lab assistant, and Eggman continues to regard him as obsolete and a reject, leading him to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder.
    • Among the things D-Fekt takes back to Tails' workshop is Amy's picture of a penguin in a sweater from "Dude, Where's My Eggman?"
    • The Cubot prototypes tell D-Fekt that they need a new protector since Friendbot (from "Fiendbot") is now in Roboken, refencing the events of the "Robots From The Sky" four-parter.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Knuckles. When he tries to guess what D-Fekt is saying to them, he concludes that he's either looking for a loaf of bread or a penguin wearing a top hat, the latter of which he leans towards.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For D-Fekt, the main antagonist of the Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice game.
  • Losing Your Head: After D-Fekt imprisons Eggman, Orbot and Cubot in their closet, Eggman pulls Cubot's head off to trick Bowtie Cubot into thinking Cubot's been beheaded to distract him so Eggman could hit his self-destruct button.
  • Sequel Episode: To "Beyond the Valley of the Cubots".
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Sonic points out to tails that it would be easier to communicate with D-Fekt if he could just talk, which inspires Tails to install a voice chip. When Amy asks Tails why he didn't do it earlier, Tails says that he needed an inciting incident.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Once Tails installs a voice chip into D-Fekt, D-Fekt gains the ability to speak.
  • Tempting Fate: This line from Eggman when he unleashes an army of Motobugs against D-Fekt and the Cubot Prototypes:
Eggman: Those reject-bots are no match for my army! What are you gonna do? Throw them at us?
(D-Fekt uses his telekenesis to do just that.)
Eggman: Next time I'll keep my ideas to myself.
  • Timmy in a Well: When D-Fekt tries to warn Tails that his translator is about to fall on him, Tails asks "What's the matter? Did Timmy fall down a well?" before the translator falls on his head and breaks. Then, when D-Fekt tries to ask the Male Fennec for the parts to repair Tails' translator, the Male Fennec asks "What is it, boy? Did Timmy fall down a well?"
  • Turned Against Their Masters: When Team Sonic introduces D-Fekt to the Cubot prototypes, D-Fekt decides to lead the Cubot Prototypes in a rebellion against Eggman. D-Fekt later turns against Team Sonic after they try to stop him from attacking the citizens of Hedgehog Village.
