Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 51 Counter Productive

Go To

The fifty-first episode of the first season of Sonic Boom.

After seeing Soar talk about his new book, Counter Productive on The Comedy Chimp Show, Knuckles is inspired to try to make amends to Charlie for getting him fired from his old job as a fruit vendor. Unfortunately for Knuckles, he only manages to make things worse for Charlie, leading to the latter turning to a life of crime.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Apathetic Citizens: This episode shows that villainy in itself isn't disapproved and is even seen as a legitimate career path, if not quite as glamorous as heroism, as long as proper procedure is followed.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Knuckles' various attempts to make amends with Charlie eventually lead to him becoming evil.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Knuckles.
  • The Dog Bites Back: The first half of this episode consists of Knuckles aggressively trying to make amends with Charlie for getting him fired years ago, only to inadvertently and systematically destroy Charlie's entire life. Charlie snaps, constructs a Humongous Mecha, and spends the second half of the episode terrorising Knuckles with it.
  • Doomed Supermarket Display: Knuckles takes a single apple from a pyramid of baskets, causing the entire pyramid to fall over.
  • Dramatic Thunder: Thunder booms and lightning flashes when Charlie turns to a life of crime to get back at Knuckles for getting him fired.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: After Knuckles gets Charlie fired from his new job as an archaelogist, Charlie turns to a life of crime.
  • Gray Rain of Depression: After Knuckles gets Charlie fired from his new job, it rains when Charlie heads home, only to find out that Belinda kicked him out for being a pushover.
  • Heel Realization: Played for Laughs when Knuckles deduces that he is a horrible person based on subjective information.
Knuckles: Don't look at me! I'm a monster! A MONSTER!
  • Iris Out: This episode ends with a heart-shaped one over Charlie and Belinda when the latter congratulates the former on standing up for himself and getting a new job as a supervillain.
  • Mini-Mecha: Charlie's Mech Suit, which he dug up and reassembled in this episode and continues to use in his future appearances in the series, is able to immobilize opponents in energy fields and fire concussive energy blasts; however, its hamstrings are fairly vulnerable to damage.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Everything that Knuckles does to try to help Charlie at his new job as an archaelogist only makes things worse for him, which results in Charlie getting fired.
  • Outlaw Couple: Charlie and Belinda. When they first appeared, they were just an average married couple, but after Charlie turned evil, Belinda not only supported him, but seems even happier now, if anything.
  • Pie in the Face: One of the ways Knuckles tries making amends with Charlie after the latter turns to a life of crime is by baking him a pie. Charlie responds by hitting Knuckles in the face with the pie.
  • Police Are Useless: Knuckles gets the Beaver Policeman to act as a go-between for him and Charlie. Charlie's mech scares the Beaver Policeman away.
  • Praising Shows You Don't Watch: In-Universe; Knuckles takes Soar the Eagle's words to heart despite only learning them through a brief advertisement rather than the book advertised. Unintentionally lampshaded by Knuckles himself.
  • Rooting for the Empire: An In-Universe example; Dr. Eggman roots for Charlie during the big fight between him and Knuckles.
Eggman: Let's go, Charlie! (claps) Really? Nothing? Am I the only one on the side of evil here?
