Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 49 Role Models

Go To

The fourty-ninth episode of the first season of Sonic Boom.

After saving the village from Dr. Eggman for the millionth time, Sonic and his friends win awards and are considered honorary role models. When the villagers of Unnamed Village complain that Sonic and his friends don't act too much like positive role models, Mayor Fink hires D.B. Platypus to ensure that they follow his etiquette. Unfortunately, this results in them being unable to stop Eggman when he menaces the Unnamed Village.

This episode provides examples of:

  • An Aesop: This episode's moral basically comes down to "stop being so politically correct that it ruins your life."
  • Baby See, Baby Do: When Sonic and his friends throw their food wrappers in the trash like basketballs, Chumley imitates them by tossing his bottle. When Lady Walrus sees the incident, she calls them bad role models... just before telling Chumley she's going to find a precarious ledge for him to play on.
  • Characterization Marches On: In a previous episode, "Can An Evil Genius Crash On Your Couch For A Few Days?", Amy endorses inoffensive therapy between Sonic and Eggman such as using "I"-statements. By this episode, even she finds the method completely ridiculous.
  • Human Cannonball: Knuckles launches Tails out of a cannon and Tails lands in a trash can. Before Knuckles can do the same with Amy, he is stopped by D.B.. When Sonic protests against D.B. calling him and his friends bad role models, he hits the cannon, launching Amy into a tree.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Chumley tosses his bottle, imitating Sonic and his friends tossing their trash into a trash can like basketballs, Lady Walrus chastises them for being bad role models. She then takes Chumley and says, "Come on, sweetie, let's go find a precarious ledge for you to play on."
  • Political Overcorrectness: D.B. endorses this, forcing the heroes to take on extremely mannerly and inoffensive behaviour to set a good example for the rest of the town. Some examples include not allowing Amy to cook because of gender stereotypes, despite her enjoying cooking as well as being the only one on the team who can cook; and forcing them to confront Eggman by "using their words".
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Sticks eventually gets fed up with having to answer to D.B.'s overbearing politically correct attitude, so much that she bluntly tells how sick she is of hearing his whistle and being a role model, and to solidify it, she decides that the reward simply isn't worth it. Sticks destroys the trophy, gives it to D.B., and leaves. Later on, she comes back and launches D.B. into the garbage so that she and the crew can fight without having to answer to him.
  • Take That!: This episode is a giant middle finger to the idea of being a role model.
Sonic: Being a role model is overrated. I'd much rather be... hilariously edgy!
  • Wastebasket Ball: Sonic and his toss the wrappers from their food at Meh Burger into the trash can like basketballs. Chumley tries to imitate them by tossing his bottle, but misses the trash can.
