Go To

When Dr. Eggman challenges Sonic and his friends to fight against him one at a time, he uses their weaknesses to his advantage.

Tropes

  • Bad Boss: In the face of their Combat Commentator mocking his defeat, Eggman threatens to take Orbot and Cubot apart and then reassemble them blindfolded.
  • Batman Gambit: Eggman consistently plays on each team member's weakness to distract them and steal an item: Amy's hammer with claims of charity work, Sticks's cage by agreeing with her crazy conspiracies, and Tails's new robot by both asking Tails complimentary questions and (after the switch shift) distracting Knuckles with assorted warm-up exercises. He then deliberately avoids Sonic long enough for the hedgehog to pass out from boredom, leaving him wide open for a trap made up of all the stolen items. Eggman is only too happy to pat himself on the back for this one.
  • Combat Commentator: Orbot and Cubot serve as this during the episode.
Cubot: And down goes El Huevo Loco!note
Orbot: It's all over for the bald behemoth!
  • Funny Bruce Lee Noises: What does Sonic do to pass time before he battles Eggman? Well, in this instance, he decides to have a pretend tea party with some of the canyon's rocks and make some indescribable noises in the process.
Sonic: (cowboy voice) More tea, Mrs. Rock-Bottom? (high voice) Don't mind if I do, Mr. Boulder!
  • Happy Dance: Eggman after trapping Sonic.
  • Honor Before Reason: After Eggman traps Sonic, he points out to the others they still have "an iron-clad agreement" for solo fights. They take him up on this by tagging in an out as needed rather than ganging up on him. It does work for them.
  • Ignored Aesop: After Eggman is trapped, Amy talks about how taking turns didn't stop them from working together as a team. Sonic then brags that he alone trapped Eggman in a cage, which prompts the others to lock him in said cage and walk off.
  • Lampshade Hanging: On the subject of Eggman being Smarter Than You Look, Sticks points out they tend to forget the guy is a doctor. Cubot later makes the same observation.
  • Ninety-Nine Bottles of Beer: Trapped in the force-field-enhanced bamboo prison, Eggman opts to sing "A thousand bottles of liquid nitrogen on the wall" to pass the time. Sonic is visibly displeased.
  • A Taste of Defeat: This episode is one of the rarest times things have ended on a Humiliation Conga for Sonic: in this case, his friends lock him in the same force-field-enhanced bamboo prison as Eggman for becoming too much of a Glory Hound.
  • The Trickster: This episode features Eggman at his most wily. After convincing Team Sonic to take turns, he goes on to beat every one of them one by one not by fighting them, but by outwitting them with Bugs Bunny-esque wordplay and tricks (and, in the course of tricking them, stealing their stuff). He then confronts Sonic, and is easily able to trap him using the things he mugged from the others.
