Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 41 Bro Down Showdown

Go To

The forty-first episode of the first season of Sonic Boom.

Sonic and Knuckles are tasked with house-sitting for Amy while she leaves to an accept an award for the Most Selfless Person. Sonic and Knuckles accidentally spill nacho cheese on Amy's couch, and every attempt to get the stain out ruins the couch even more. The two get the idea to enter themselves on Comedy Chimp's new game show, Bro-Down Showdown, which is about best friends and how much they know each other to win a new couch. When they arrive at the studio, Dixon pairs Sonic up with Dr. Eggman and Knuckles with Mike the Ox. Sonic's plan is compromised when Eggman sends his Obliterator Bot to attack him, and the rules state that fighting with his "bro" will get him disqualified.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Eggman continues his habit of misnaming Knuckles, which originated in "The Meteor". He calls him "Nurples".
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Knuckles expresses disappointment when Sonic is paired up with Eggman for the show instead of him, sadly saying "But I thought this was a Sonic and Knuckles episode."
  • Brick Joke:
    • This episode begins with Amy knocking Leroy onto his back, and since he's a turtle, he can't pick himself back up and remains there for the rest of the episode. He's still on his back when Sonic and Knuckles return from Bro-Down Showdown.
Leroy: I hope someone's been feeding my cat.
    • When Knuckles fights Obliterator Bot, he deflects one if its missiles, launching it into the air. The missle destroys Amy's couch at the end of the episode.
  • The Cameo: The two stunt bears from "Circus of Plunders" appear in this episode as contestants.
  • Coincidental Broadcast: After ruining Amy's couch, Sonic and Knuckles panic about what to do next. Cue an advert for the titular game show, announcing a recording session to be held in the village that weekend, with the winners receiving a brand-new couch. Parodied in that Knuckles doesn't understand how the advert is supposed to help them even after the prize has been stated multiple times.
  • Color Blind Confusion: At one point, Comedy Chimp asks Mike what color Knuckles is. Due to being colorblind, Mike guesses green, even though Knuckles is red. When he finds out he answered wrong, he admits he's colorblind, and when a red light flashes, he asks if the light was green.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Knuckles questions why Amy would win the Most Selfless award, especially since she snatched the invitation from Leroy after knocking him down and shouting "Mine!"
  • Exact Words: At one point, Comedy Chimp asks Sonic what Dr. Eggman has in his pocket. Sonic guesses "A hippopotamus riding on a skateboard?" It turns out that Sonic was right, as Eggman pulled out a pull-back toy of a hippopotamus riding on a skateboard.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: When Eggman unleashes his Obliterator Bot on the Unnamed Village, Knuckles decides to fight it so that Sonic doesn't have to and can remain in the game. However, Knuckles is unable to stop Obliterator Bot by himself, ending up being held in place by its foot as it's about to fire a laser at him. Sonic fights Obliterator Bot to save Knuckles, getting himself disqualified and leaving Dave the Intern and Lady Walrus as the winners.
  • Hidden Depths: Eggman is able to correctly guess that Sonic's favorite movie is Space Pigeons II, due to having heard him mumble it while pummeling him with the severed arm from one of his robot drones. He knows the answer better than Knuckles, who guessed Croctopotamus.
  • Hypocritical Humor: This episode begins with Amy finding out that she won the "Most Selfless Award"...for which she submitted herself. Even Knuckles questions this. Upon receiving the award, she yells "mine!", knocking Leroy the Turtle over and then leaving him there, unable to get back up.
Amy: In this life, you've gotta look out for number one!
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Not only do Sonic and Knuckles end up failing to win the couch, a missile launched away in the fight during the climax ends up destroying Amy's couch right in front of her. Luckily, this was before she could see that they messed it up so they get off free... sucks for Amy though.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: When Eggman calls Amy as Sonic's girlfriend, Sonic denies it, but the game show indicates a wrong answer. Technically, the buzzer sounded because Sonic and Eggman's opinions were different, but the timing of it is still very suspect.
Eggman: If you fight my robot, we'll be disqualified and you'll never win that couch for that whiny little girlfriend of yours.
Sonic: She's not my girlfriend! (the game show light indicates Sonic's answer is wrong)
  • Show Within a Show: The titular Bro-Down Showdown is a game show about best friends and how much they know each other.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: After Sonic and Knuckles try and fail to win at Bro-Down Showdown to win a new couch to replace Amy's stained one, the duo resort to a more drastic means of covering up what's happened. As Amy returns from her Award Ceremony, Sonic and Knuckles are seen running after her to stop her as she opens the door; at which point, a missile (which had been batted into the air earlier by Knuckles in a fight with Eggman's Obliterator Bot) flies in and precisely hits the stained couch, blowing it up. What really sells it are the duo's Bad "Bad Acting" reaction to it afterward.
Sonic: (Trying to hide an enormous grin all the while) Oh, man- Amy! Eggman totally destroyed your couch!
Knuckles: Yeah! And after we totally didn't spill nachos on it! Boy, that's a shame.
Sonic: Yeah, real shame. (Nudges Knuckles with his elbow, who is grinning in a ridiculously-cheesy fashion) Come on, Knuckles— let's get out of here! (They quickly leave)
