Go To

The twentieth episode of the first season of Sonic Boom.

Dr. Eggman creates a time loop during a battle he has with Sonic and his friends when his laser and plasma ball collide with lightning. At first, he uses this time loop to his advantage, as it allows him to plan his attacks more carefully. Unfortunately, when he finally succeeds in capturing Sonic, his victory is reset by the time loop, so he enlists the help of Sonic and his friends to fix it.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Agony of the Feet: At one point, after Eggman builds the superdense ball to contain the explosion, Knuckles tries to lift it, but injures his back. This causes him to drop the ball on Eggman's foot, putting Eggman in pain. Knuckles apologizes afterwards.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the end of the episode, when the time loop is fixed, a flash appears onscreen, implying that Eggman didn't fix it. It is then revealed that the flash came from Cubot's camera, he wanted to capture this beautiful moment for posterity.
  • Brick Joke: Eggman spoils the movie that Sonic and Tails are about to see by telling them that Comedy Chimp's partner is a ghost. In a later scene, where time has been reset, Tails and Eggman watch the movie at Eggman's lair, and this exchange occurs:
    Tails: I can't believe it!
    Eggman: What, what is it?
Tails: Comedy Chimp's partner was a ghost!
Eggman: Yeah, who could have seen that coming?
  • *Crack!* "Ow, My Back!": When Knuckles tries to lift the superdense ball, he injures his back and exclaims "Ow, my back!", causing him to drop the ball on Eggman's foot.
  • Enemy Mine: Eggman creates a time loop during a battle with Sonic and his friends, and since this time loop resets any victory he has over them, he enlists their help in fixing the time loop.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Eggman uses the time loop to his advantage so that he can plan his attacks against Sonic and his friends more carefully. He eventually succeeds in capturing Sonic, but the time loop resets his victory, so he has to fix it.
  • "Groundhog Day" Loop: This episode revolves around Eggman's attempts to escape a time loop he inadvertently caused.
  • Meaningless Villain Victory: Eggman is finally able to capture Sonic but the loop resets everything, rendering it moot.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: At one point, Eggman cuts off his mustache, which sparks shocked reactions from Orbot and Cubot. Eggman tells them that nothing matters because tomorrow will be a do-over anyway.
  • Running Gag: Each day begins with Orbot serving Eggman a breakfast of eggs and bacon, while saying "Wakey-Wakey, Eggs and Bakey!", which begins to get on Eggman's nerves. When Eggman stops the time loop, he finds out he succeeded when Orbot serves sausages for breakfast, having run out of bacon.
  • Toilet Humor: Orbot makes orange juice as part of Eggman's breakfast by smashing an orange against his head and pouring it into the glass through his finger, which grosses Eggman out. On the first day caused by the time loop, Eggman moves the breakfast tray out of the way, causing Orbot to pour the orange juice onto Eggman's crotch, making it look like Eggman wet himself.
  • The Tooth Hurts: Knuckles continually stalls Eggman's plan to end the time loop by using a superdense ball that only the former can lift to contain the reaction that causes it— all because he has a dentist's appointment that he doesn't want to go to. Amy attempts to convince him that the dentist isn't going to hurt him, but Sticks decides to cut out the middleman and pull the bad tooth out herself.
  • Visual Pun: This exchange:
Eggman: Is my Egg Tank ready?
(Cubot holds up a tank top with a picture of an egg on it)
    Eggman: My other Egg Tank.
  • Wrong Song Gag: As Dr. Eggman boards his Egg Tank to attack Sonic and his friends, he asks the Egg Tank's computer to play his battle music. The music it plays is calming Hawaiian music. Eggman says "Eh, close enough." and sets off on his mission.
