Recap / Solar Opposites S4E2 "The Earth Rake (beta)"

Go To

As the new boss of Davenport Rakes, Terry scores a big presentation at the Wooden City, but a jealous Korvo insists on taking it over.

Meanwhile, a grounded Jesse and Yumyulack hitch a ride to the city to try and get into a Daft Trunk concert.

Tropes:

  • Acquired Situational Narcissism: Terry has become very cocky after becoming CEO, rubbing his power in Korvo's face.
  • Almost Kiss: Terry and Korvo almost kiss after making up, but start sinking into honey first.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Pinecone seems helpful to Jesse and Yumyulack at first in their quest for the golden beet, but reveals himself to be a rotten peach and holds them at gunpoint because he hates Daft Trunk.
  • Broken Pedestal: Daft Trunk's true identities turn out to be the xenophobic bullies at the statue that beat up Yumyulack. This was apparently the subject of their second album, Never Meet Your Heroes Because They Turn Out To Be Bullies. However, Yumyulack doesn't tell Jesse this so she won't be disappointed.
  • Chained to a Bed: Korvo tricks Terry by pretending to use handcuffs in a sex game, then leaves him behind before the meeting with the comptroller. Apparently this happens at the hotel a lot.
  • The Gambling Addict: The Wooden City comptroller keeps making (and losing) bets with Korvo. It turns out that's why Terry wanted to take him to Woodchuck E. Trees — it's "a very winnable casino" and would put him in a good mood.
  • Ignorance Is Bliss: Yumyulack lies to Jesse that Daft Trunk is cool even after they beat him up so she won't be disappointed.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Korvo shocks the comptroller with his ability to get impossible holes-in-one in golf.
  • Kinky Cuffs: Invoked when Korvo proposes kinky hotel sex with Terry, only to leave him Chained to a Bed so he can take over the presentation.
  • Sequel Episode: To "The Emergency Urbanizer," as the Solars return to the Wooden City they built in that episode.
  • Shout-Out:
    • An expy of Jim from The Office (US) gives an Aside Glance during the cold open, and Korvo yells that they don't need to pay Krasinski any royalties.
    • Daft Trunk is a parody of Daft Punk.
    • When Korvo tricks Terry by chaining him to the bed, Terry accuses him of "Gerald's Game-ing" him. When the hotel attendant dies on him, Terry points out that it's just like the poster.
    • Yumyulack wants to break into the Daft Trunk party "Ocean's 8 style."
  • Tempting Fate: The attendant who comes to rescue Terry has to rush up a bunch of stairs without taking his heart medication... then stops to eat a meaty sandwich. Terry calls he's gonna have a heart attack before it even happens.
    Terry: Not loving this pattern.
  • Worm in an Apple: The cashier in the Apple Store (as in a literal apple store) is a giant worm.
  • You Are Grounded!: Part of being a normal family means Jesse and Yumyulack are now grounded for their violent behavior in the previous episode. However, they sneak out to the Wooden City to see a concert by hiding inside the Pupa.
