Recap / Solar Opposites S1 E4 - "The Booster Manifold"

Go To

Terry's antics becomes too much for Korvo that he ends up vomiting up a red Goobler, a creature made from built-up stress that is hellbent on killing its host. This leads to Terry and Korvo locking themselves in their house from ,and later hunting, that little bastard.

Meanwhile, Jesse and Yumyulack started growing flowers that releases euphoria-inducing pollen similar to drugs on their heads which becomes their ticket to popularity. However, as you may expect from this show, it goes horribly wrong when they're invited to a cool kids party.

The Pupa, once again, goes on a solo adventure this time winding up at a exotic animal auction where he escapes with all the captives.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Auction of Evil: Pupa is kidnapped, sold at an auction, and locked up in a tiny cage. Replace "Pupa" with your pet or child and it becomes terrifying.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Terry and Korvo tell the kids that their species doesn't go through puberty; the flowers on their head are a type of fungus that naturally plagues them and they'll ultimately grow into wise old trees, and if they're lucky, someone might eventually make a cottage out of them.
    • In addition to creating goobers instead of sweating when they're stressed out, every 100,000th goober is a much larger red one that they vomit out instead and which seeks to kill the alien that created it, either directly or by stressing them out so much that their brain turns into a baby.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Pupa's Sweet Tooth. He's motivated to exit his cage by finding candy strewn outside, which allows him to squeeze through the bars.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Pupa may be an apocalypse in the making, but he won't let a bunch of innocent animals face inhumane torture from humans.
  • G-Rated Drug: The flowers Jesse and Yumyulack grow from their heads release pollen with hallucinogenic effects similar to ecstasy and cocaine respectively which makes everyone like them. When their pollens mix, however, it creates a miniature Zombie Apocalypse.
  • Healing Shiv: To cure the Zombie Apocalypse caused by Jesse's and Yumyulack's head flowers' spores mixing together, Korvo makes a variety of futuristic melee weapons that allow the aliens to violently kill the zombies, only for the "alien goo" in them to cure their zombification and heal their wounds, which he thinks is a lot cooler and more fun than just making a lot of syringes full of said "alien goo" and giving the zombies injections with them to cure them.
  • Hero of Another Story: Pupa ends up in the exotic animal trade and rescues a bunch of captured animals. He busts out without a problem.
  • Made of Iron: Yumyulack is mauled by a dog, run over by an ambulance, and needs resuscitation for both. The minute he checks out of the hospital, it resumes racing home.
  • Mood Whiplash: In the middle of the miniature Zombie Apocalypse and Goobler thriller scenes, there's a poignant moment where Pupa helps his new animal friends hitch a ride on a boxcar and refuses to go with them.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Terry accidentally sets the Red Goobler free in a fit of panic, right when it was trying to kill itself. The Red Goobler is still out there, waiting for another opportunity to murder Korvo.
  • Shout-Out: Pupa rescues a duck in a sailor suit, a family of Dalmatians, and Paddington Bear.
  • Stealth Pun: Jesse and Yumyulack's head flowers release pollen that mimics the effects of ecstasy and cocaine that seems harmless on its own but when mixed, it creates an extremely potent airborne virus that infects the entire party into a violent Zombie Apocalypse. In other words, these teens are high on zombie drugs.
