Recap / Skylanders Academy S2 E4 "Thankstaking for the Memories"

Go To

Written by: Nick Confalone

It is Thankstaking weekend, so all the staff at Skylander Academy are packing up to go spend time with their families, while Stealth Elf, who doesn’t know her family, stays at the academy to hone in her skills, like she does every year. But this time, Spyro also stays at the academy, due to his friends not wanting him to come along with them following various accidents caused by him. Thinking so much about family after thinking so much about his missing dragon kind, he wishes to spend some time with Elf, who would rather train, but she agrees to put it on hold for Spyro's sake. But their playtime goes overboard when Spyro convinces her to follow him into the relics room, only for them to get stuck inside. Meanwhile, the Doom Raiders tries to have a nice Thankstaking dinner, but things doesn't go according to plan.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Accidental Hero: By making Claire run away crying after he insults her mother and following thereafter, Gary unknowingly saves the two of them from becoming the Doom Raiders' dessert.
  • Big "WHY?!": Kaos says this when he realizes his dish is terrible and his mother and Glumshanks never told him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Gary making Claire cry by insulting her mother is something even Chompy Mage thinks is going too far, judging by his shocked reaction to it.
  • From Bad to Worse: After Spyro’s plan to get out failed, the relic room’s self destruct countdown starts, so now it’s not about getting out before they starve, it’s about getting out before the room blows up.
  • Hates Being Alone: Spyro's never-ending search for answers about his heritage has led him to feeling this due to thinking so much about the concept of family
  • Lack of Empathy: The other three team members absolutely do not want Spyro to come along to their homes after all the accidents he caused while staying at them. And they are blatant about it too, with almost no kind words to Spyro as they leave him behind. Even when they return after the break, they are surprised that the academy is still standing now when Spyro has stayed behind at it.
  • Locked in a Room: The plot is about Spyro and Stealth Elf being trapped in the Relics Room. Tensions between them are higher than they will ever be because of how it was Spyro's fault they were locked in the first place.
  • Long List: As the only one who thought about talking about everything he's thankful for taking the last year, Broccoli Guy has a very long list of them.
  • Noodle Incident: Last time Spyro spent Thankstaking with Eruptor’s family, Spyro almost burned down the house, and Pop Fizz mentions at the end of the episode that he burned down one of Pop Fizz’ siblings once during one of the times he was at Pop Fizz’s place.
  • To Serve Man: Chompy Mage invites the Mabu couple Gary and Claire to the Doomer Raiders' feast, with the clear intent of having the two turned into dessert for the villains and them none the wiser. While the desire to eat them can be expected from Chompy Mage and Wolfgang, even Golden Queen and Dreamcatcher show no qualms about wanting to devour them, and Chef Pepperjack was prepared to cook them before the pair ended up running off.
  • Troll: The computer for the relics room fooled Spyro and Elf into thinking the room had a self destruct mechanic for no reason other than to mess with them.
  • Villains Out Shopping: The holiday Thankstaking was created because all the villains of Skylands want to take one weekend to celebrate all the taking they have done that year.
  • Your Tradition Is Not Mine: A Thankstaking tradition is that before the villains starts eating their dinner, they have to go through what they are thankful over taking over the last year. The Doom Raiders almost didn't do this until Broccoli Guy reminded them and judging by their dismay both over having do to this and over Broccli Guy's Long List, and the fact that nobody else brought their own list, and it implies that they were keen on skipping that part this year.
