Recap / She Ra And The Princesses Of Power S 5 E 10 Return To The Fright Zone

Go To

Adora, Catra, Perfuma and Netossa reenter the Fright Zone to rescue Scorpia while Bow and Glimmer head to the library to check on Bow's dads.

Tropes:

  • All There in the Manual: The subtitles refer to the member of Rebel Squadron Greyskull as Serenia.
  • Attack the Injury: Key to Netossa's plan to defeat chipped Spinnerella is to exploit an old ankle injury of Spinnerella's. Sure enough, during the confrontation she attacks that ankle repeatedly.
  • Boring, but Practical: Many of Netossa’s plans to exploit everyone’s weaknesses. For instance, her way to “defeat” Catra is to spray her with a squirt-bottle and then toss a net at her when she panics. It works for the record.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Catra argues that relying on Perfuma's plan for The Power of Friendship to free Scorpia won't work, and in response Perfuma responds with a tirade about how Catra had been a terrible friend to Scorpia to support her point. Perfuma is right that Catra had been a terrible friend and it does turn out that Scorpia was Fighting from the Inside, but Catra was also right and Scorpia's willpower alone wasn't enough.
  • Call-Back: We see the damage from Catra and Hordak's fight at the end of season 4 again, which Catra calls a "small disagreement".
  • Cats Hate Water: When Catra snarks that Netossa doesn't know her weakness, Netossa sprays Catra with a squirt-bottle and then snares her when she panics. Catra's also very unhappy later in the episode when she has to deal with Mermista trying to drown her.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Netossa uses her knowledge of Spinerella's old ankle injury to keep her off-balance once their fight heads to the roof of a building, even sweeping her off her feet on the injured foot.
  • Continuity Nod: The First Ones' ruins that Lance and George have been investigating turns out to be the Crystal Spire the Best Friends Squad ended up in from the second episode. Unlike then they get to learn some useful knowledge this time.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Netossa is so competitive that she has profiles on the weaknesses of all the Princesses as well as both Bow and Catra.
  • Creator Cameo: An art style version; Netossa's illustrations of how to disable Spinnerella and the other princess' weaknesses were drawn by ND Stevenson himself, in the manner of his distinctive personal doodles.
  • Death Glare: Catra gives one at the end of the episode when she sees Shadow Weaver again.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Scorpia manages to resist Horde Prime's control long enough to intentionally miss instead of executing Adora and Perfuma.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Catra smugly boasts that Netossa doesn't have any intel on real threats like herself, Netossa promptly sprays her in the face with a squirt-bottle and then snares her in a net when she panics.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: During the Horde's takeover, Lance and George left a dad joke in a note for Bow so that he can find them. It works, but he and Glimmer are... less than amused at the punchline.
  • Man-Eating Plant: Netossa draws a couple on her sheet detailing Perfuma's weaknesses, implying that she could create and use them to lethal effect but chooses not to out of fear of injuring or killing her friends.
  • Name-Meaning Change: Keeping with the trend of severing any connections to He-Man, the origin of the phrase "For the Honor of Grayskull!" is changed from referring to Castle Grayskull (which doesn't exist in this continuity) to the "Grayskull Squadron" that joined Mara in rebelling against the First Ones.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Perfuma, the All-Loving Hero of the Rebellion, is far more cold to Catra due to her past misdeeds towards Scorpia. It's only after Catra apologizes and admits that Perfuma is a better friend then she was that the princess starts treating her warmly.
  • Oh, Crap!: Catra when she sees pipes leaking and realizes that Scorpia isn't the only Princess in the Fright Zone.
  • Pet the Dog: After being understandably standoffish to Catra the whole episode due to her past treatment of Scorpia after the former admits that Perfuma was a better friend then she was the princess gives some encouraging words to Catra, telling her that opening up her heart to others isn't a weakness, and offering to teach her meditation to help with her temper and abandonment issues.
  • The Power of Friendship: Perfuma refuses to attack Scorpia and tells Horde Prime that her strength comes from her friends and that she believes in Scorpia. While it isn't enough to completely override the chip Scorpia is able fight back enough to miss the heroes and allow them to escape.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • When breaking down the Princesses' weaknesses, Netossa delivers a low-key one when she remarks that Glimmer's weakness is crippling self-doubt coupled with overwhelming hubris, and Perfuma's an inability to unleash the full extent of her powers due to being afraid of hurting or killing her allies. Neither princess appreciates her blunt and callous psychoanalysis of their issues.
    • In response to Catra arguing that relying on Scorpia Fighting from the Inside won't work, Perfuma goes into a tirade about how nobody showed Scorpia any real kindness or was a real friend in the Fight Zone, clearly aiming this at Catra for being a bad friend. Catra doesn't deny it.
  • Tainted Veins: The chipped princesses are shown with green veins growing from their necks and their eyes as the chips' influence gets stronger.
  • Thought They Knew Already: Netossa says that everyone knows about Spinerella's twisted ankle, but she was apparently the only one in the room who knew about it, given the expressions of everyone else at the table.
  • Understatement: Catra says that she and Hordak may have had a "small disagreement" before Horde Prime took them.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Netossa reveals that Mermista is weak to fire, note  as are Frosta (ice melts) and Perfuma (plants burn).
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Catra is attacked by Mermista in the Fright Zone, and lampshades that she had to deal with the water princess.
  • Willfully Weak: Netossa points out that Perfuma could potentially be one of the most powerful princeses but is afraid to use her whole power. However, Perfuma says that she won't use her powers on her friends.
