Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 2 E 9 Grim Judgement

Go To

A Puritan monster going by the name Hebediah Grim is passing judgment on the couples of Crystal Cove and perpetual losers and soccer players Gary and Ethan just happen to be there to save the girls in the nick of time, naturally leading the gang to investigate. Meanwhile, Fred gets to know his biological parents.

The episode provides examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Gary and Ethan and to a lesser extent Brad and Judy
  • All Men Are Perverts: Gary and Ethan's motivation? "Girls! Duh!"
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Sheriff Stone insists to Mayor Nettles that candles and nice music are part of every stakeout. She naturally doesn't buy it.
    • After Gary and Ethan are caught, the gang see Sheriff Stone and Mayor Nettles (wearing his hat) trying to sneak by. The two insist they were just doing another stakeout and leave as quickly as possible.
  • Breather Episode: Compared to the last couple of episodes before and after.
  • Butt-Monkey: Once again, Brenda and Dylan show up, having started dating after surviving several monster attacks, but just as they're about to kiss, an undead pilgrim named Hebediah Grim attempts to smash them with his mallet. Dylan runs off, accusing Brenda of being a monster magnet, and Gary saves Brenda... only for them both to fall off a cliff escaping.
  • Cool Shades: Ethan wears a pair at one point.
  • Disguised in Drag: Scooby as Daphne, as part of the final trap for Hebediah Grim.
  • Engineered Heroics: Ethan and Gary took turns attacking people while dressed as Hebediah Grim so the other could pretend to drive them off and impress the girls who were threatened.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Played with at the stakeout scene. Hebediah Grim intends to "judge" Mayor Nettles, Daphne and a teen girl for their "provocative" outfits, but spares Velma due to her outfit being more "modest" in comparison.
  • Frame-Up: With the gang suspecting them, Ethan and Gary try to frame drama student Dougal McGinnis by placing the incriminating yearbook on the guy's porch. During the summation, it's demonstrated this completely failed because Ethan didn't remove the "Property of Ethan The Awesome" page.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: There's a picture of a dark-skinned student with the surname "Williams" next to Daphne's photo in the yearbook. A young relative of Cassidy's, perhaps?
  • Large Ham: Hebediah Grim.
    "AAAAAAAAAALL WILL BE JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDGED!!!!!!"
  • His Name Is...: Dougal McGuiness recognises the yearbook because he signed it. But Hebidiah Grimm appears to “judge” him before he can reveal who it is.
  • Humongous-Headed Hammer: Hebediah Grim wields one.
  • Monster of the Week: Hebediah Grim, an undead Puritan Judge insistent on keeping the young women of Crystal Cove "pure".
  • Not So Above It All: After spending so much time having her looks questioned by Hebediah Grim, Velma happily rubs Gary and Ethan getting caught in their faces. Scooby is legitimately scared by how far she takes it.
  • Rescue Romance: Every time Hebediah Grim threatens a pretty girl, Gary or Ethan is always on hand to drive the villain off, leading to this. When they're caught, they explain they were exploiting this trope.
  • Sand In My Eyes: When Fred doubts he'll ever live up to his parents' trap-making ways, they assure him he can once he believes in himself the way they already believe in him. Fred starts tearing up and immediately says he has to go check the counter-weights.
  • Shout-Out: The "Sternum to Sternum" opening is a shot for shot parody of Hart to Hart's.
  • Stock Footage: They use the exact same footage when the second Hebediah Grim is trapped.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Used as a plot point. Gary is seen with at least two hot girls in two days thanks to fending off Hebediah Grim, making him and his pal Ethan suspects.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We never see Brenda's reaction to Gary and Ethan's "Scooby-Doo" Hoax.
  • With Friends Like These...: Daphne questions why both of them took turns being Hebediah Grim. Ethan says because he doesn't trust Gary and vice-versa, so they agreed to alternate.
  • You Will Be Spared: "ALL SHALL BE JUDGED!" ... except Velma, because Gary and Ethan don't find her attractive.
Hebediah: You will be spared. You are the very model of purity; plain, wholesome, and untempting.

Judy: You know, Fred, the real secret of this trap we sprung tonight is no secret at all.
Brad: We just wanted to work on it closely with you, our son.
