Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 2 E 14 Heart Of Evil

Go To

Radley Crown was a security guard who, with his dog Reggie, thwarted a break-in by a giant robot, but Reggie was left for all but dead. Dr. Benton Quest offers to help the situation. Five years later, the same robot is seen breaking into companies and tapping into their computer databases, only to be pursued by Blue Falcon (Crown) and Dynomutt (Reggie refurbished as a cyborg dog). Blue Falcon forms an uneasy alliance with Scooby and the gang in tracking the robot, which leads them to Destroido where the robot takes Blue Falcon and (mistakenly) Scooby-Doo to its master—Jonny Quest villain Dr. Zin, who is looking for the Quest Power-X source (it's what is powering Dynomutt) to be the heart of his master creation.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass: Dynomutt is more competent than in the original source material. Admittedly, he's still a terrific doofus...
  • Anti-Villain: Dr. Zin only wants the Quest Power-X source to save his daughter... who's only in danger because he used her as a guinea-pig for his experiments.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Shaggy and Scooby are ecstatic over getting to work with Blue Falcon and Dynomutt.
  • Bat Deduction: Naturally, with Blue Falcon serving as a parody of the Dark Knight himself, it's Daphne who gets to do this. Seeing the robot performing some Hollywood Hacking, Daphne is able to instantly deduce it's absorbing the information.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Mess with Scooby-Doo and Shaggy gets really angry!
  • Breather Episode: After the first half of the season ended with a Wham Episode, the second half starts with a Crossover episode.
  • Casual Danger Dialog: As Fred and Daphne fight off Zin's minions, Daphne tells Fred he should stay in her own house rather than living outdoors in the Mystery Machine.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When discussing his current living conditions, Daphne asks what he'll do if a certain someone on the fence about him drops by to visit by herself. Fred suggests he could move his shark cage, but he's firm on the placement of his lizard hammock.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: When Blue Falcon and Dynomutt bust up the lobby of Destroido, Mr. E points out the kids could've just phoned ahead. Of course, Blue Falcon didn't exactly leave them any choice.
  • Crossover: Another Hanna-Barbera crossover. This time with Dynomutt, Dog Wonder and Jonny Quest.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Zin's daughter.
  • Expy: Blue Falcon was already an expy of Batman, but now he has a bulkier build, a huskier voice and more of predisposition towards anger and violence, much more akin to Batman from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
    • Even his line about "17 ways to incapacitate you — and all of them hurt" is similar to a line from the comic.
    • Dr. Zin is an Asian mastermind assisted by his daughter, a British henchman, and a vast criminal network, calling to mind Ra's al Ghul.
  • Filler: The whole episode is basically played for laughs, has no immediate effect on the rest of the series, and can easily be skipped when binge-watching.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Fred questions Mr. E about the situation, but this goes nowhere. Blue Falcon gets in on it by manhandling Mr. E and telling Dynomutt to break out the dental instruments.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: Radley is devastated by Reggie being about to die and pleads for help. Dr. Quest agrees to help, saying he knows how he'd feel if it was Bandit in Reggie's place.
  • It's Personal: Since Scooby's his dog, Shaggy insists on driving to Volcano Island.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Blue Falcon tells Mr. E they can do this the easy way or the hard way, making it clear which way he prefers. Dynomutt immediately breaks out the dental instruments when asked.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Velma notes they really should've been aware of a literal volcano island so close to where they live.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: The license plate in Scooby's stomach is dated April, the same month the series premiered during.
  • Lives in a Van: Fred and Nova are now living in the Mystery Machine following him leaving his house behind.
  • Monster of the Week: The Dragon, a Mini-Mecha created by Dr. Zin.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Shout-Out: "Jeepers, Fred, you're living in a van down by the river!"
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Radly Crown's change into Blue Falcon doesn't seem to have done him any favours, turning into a rabid psychotic.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Dr. Zin and his daughter leave our heroes behind on an exploding island, even after Dynomutt saves said daughter's life.

Blue Falcon: This is not over, I'll hunt him, I'll find him and when I do...
Shaggy: Dude! Would you give it a rest? Zin isn't all that bad. After all, he loves his daughter almost as much as we love our dogs.
