Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 1 E 18 The Dragons Secret

Go To

A new exchange student, Mai Lee, comes to town and Shaggy is instantly smitten while Velma is instantly jealous while Daphne prepares to go to one of her parents' events with Fred for the first time as a couple. Meanwhile two mysterious Kung-Fu Wizards battle over four ancient and powerful rings.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Mai to a T. She manipulates the gang to get rid of Wang to get the rest of the rings to get the ruby.
  • Breather Episode: Little to nothing of importance to the greater plot besides some character development happens.
  • The Cameo: Gizmo is in a cage at the pawn shop at the beginning.
  • Color-Coded Characters: The Red and White Wizards, but played with as The Red Wizard, Mr. Chen, is protecting the rings, while the White Wizard, Mr. Wang, just wanted the rings to open the dragon and steal The Dragon's Heart, flip flopping the normal color schemes(though red is also considered a good color depending on the situation.)
  • Comically Missing the Point: Mayor Jones walks in on the trap and wonders... why the White Wizard, who the Mayor mistakes for a Geisha, isn't down town at the haunted geisha mansion.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Mr. Wang.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Fred activates a trap in the Blake's dinning room and reveals he's set traps in every one of the gang's houses, just in case. He also does this to the Blake's boat since he had no idea where Mai Lee would end up.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Chen, who has predominantly black and red attire, is trying to protect the Dragons Heart.
  • Easily Forgiven: Or more that Shaggy gets over Mai Lee using him rather easily.
  • Expy: Mr. Wang(The White Wizard) is basically a less racially insensitive update of Zen Tuo from the original series, in that he's a businessman masquerading as a white garbed chinese ghost chasing the gang for a priceless artifact one of their friends has.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Velma towards Mai Lee. At first it seems she's just trying to prevent Mai Lee from being hurt by Shaggy but it later becomes apparent that it's due to her lingering feelings towards Shaggy.
  • Light Is Not Good: The White Wizard, with a predominantly white and blue uniform, is the secondary villain of the episode.
  • Magic Skirt: Mai Lee, twice.
  • Monster of the Week: The Kung Fu Wizards, supernatural Chinese mages who oppose one another, with the Red Wizard declaring that the Dragon's Heart must remain undisturbed, and the White Wizard seeking the Dragon's Heart for himself.
  • Race for Your Love: Velma, after seeing how upset Shaggy looked when Mai Lee left, encourages him to do this in the end to say goodbye to Mai Lee. However it turns out that the rest of the gang had set it up to stop her from getting away with The Dragon's Heart.
  • Shock and Awe: The Wizards' key ability.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Shaggy asks this of Mai Lee and she coldly responds yes.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The Blakes complain that the Jones family—both Fred and Mayor Jones—is a Doom Magnet for them.
Barty: Oh, spare me. Something’s always happening when the Jones boys are around.
Mayor Jones: Hey, what's that supposed to mean?!

Shaggy: Was everything about you a lie? Like, even us?
Mai Le: Sorry,dude.
Velma: He's too good for you, dog issues or no dog issues.
Mai Le: I still don't know what that means.
