Recap / Scooby Doo And Guess Who S 1 E 1 Revenge Of The Swamp Monster

Go To

Just after wrapping up a mystery, the gang finds another when famous sportsman Chris Paul calls Shaggy in to be his caddy while he golfs to save a local area, only for it to turn out that a swamp monster is haunting the tournament.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: In-Universe, Velma is thoroughly unimpressed by the Beeman of Alcatraz turning out to be the beekeeper, snarking that she didn't see that coming.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Velma points out that even though the caddy was small, he was still able to be extremely strong as the Swamp Monster due to years of playing golf strengthening him.
  • Interclass Friendship: Shaggy refers to Chris Paul as an old friend; the pair have a Secret Handshake and Shaggy even credits Chris with saving his life once. Chris Paul is an NBA superstar while Shaggy is considered an ordinary guy outside of his connection to Mystery Inc. One of the others lampshades this when Shaggy says a friend is sending him a helicopter, commenting that it must be a rich friend.
  • Noodle Incident: Chris Paul and Shaggy apparently knew each other prior to the series, with Chris having once saved Shaggy's life, and intent on having Shaggy pay him back. It becomes resolved by the end; Chris shared a pizza with Shaggy, who hadn't eaten in three or four hours.
  • Post-Adventure Adventure: The first episode, after the cold open, begins with the gang unmasking "The Bee-Man of Alcatraz". We don't hear any more about the mystery; it's just establishing business as usual.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Chris Paul dribbles a hot dog.
  • Swamp Monster: "Revenge of the Swamp Monster!" features one as the Villain of the Week, but like many monsters turns out to be a civilian in a disguise. It's a lumpish thing that lurks in the water hazards (and apparently sometimes the sand traps) of the golf course and keeps kidnapping the golfers.
  • You Meddling Kids: Parodied; the gang has heard the speech blaming them for messing up an Evil Plan so often that they don't even bother to stick around for it when the helicopter arrives. When the culprit tries to yell it after them, Daphne can't hear him over the rotors and Fred just dismisses it as "the usual."
