Recap / Scooby Doo And Guess Who S 1 E 3 Peebles Pet Shop Of Terrible Terrors

Go To

Driven by Scooby's craving for Scooby Snacks, the gang finds themselves at a deserted pet shop late at night. They find out from actress, comedienne, writer, and volunteer Wanda Sykes that the owner, Mr. Peebles, has been kidnapped by a monster, apparently some exotic beast explorer Dr. Smythe asked him to keep for him.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Nonsapience: Magilla Gorilla's appearance brings him down to a more "realistic" level and has him only making grunt sounds instead of talking.
  • Adaptational Villainy: The culprit was Mr. Peebles, because he was so fed up with Magilla Gorilla. He complains about Magilla eating him out of house and home and plans to start a small man's clothing business.
  • Bully Bulldog: Shaggy gets bitten by a small bulldog when he tries to feed it.
  • Crossover: The third episode involves the gang investigating a case at Peebles' Pet Shop from Magilla Gorilla. Both the titular character and Peebles make appearances.
  • Damsel in Distress: Wanda is briefly kidnapped by the monster. Afterwards, Scooby refuses to put her down.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: When Magilla Gorilla gives Fred a friendly slap on the back, he knocks Fred into a box. After seeing the results, he looks somewhat abashed.
  • Feathered Fiend: Downplayed; while the gang are hiding from the monster, Scooby gets pecked on the nose by a macaw whose cage he's hiding in.
  • Fiendish Fish: The fish monster resembles an anglerfish.
  • Gentle Gorilla: None other than Magilla Gorilla himself.
  • Hurricane of Puns: Wanda Sykes apparently met Scooby at a dog show, a flashback of which shows Scooby attempting to compete. He starts by showing his boxing moves, ("I'm a boxer!") then by showing his pointing skills ("I'm a pointer!"), then doing his best impression of a toro ("I'm a bulldog!"), and finally, he eats a bunch of frankfurters at once ("I'm a hot dog!").
  • Interclass Friendship: Wanda Sykes and Scooby. She's a celebrity with dozens of roles; he's a dog, who, while he's known somewhat for his exploits with the gang, is nowhere near as famous. They met at a dog show and Wanda was impressed enough by his talents that she gave him every ribbon.
  • Real Men Hate Affection: Shaggy gets very choked up upon learning that Scooby turned down Wanda's offer to adopt him because he didn't want to leave Shaggy, and again when he repeats his decision at the end. They get very huggy, only to break apart when they notice everyone is staring at them.
  • Say My Name: Scooby screams Wanda's name when she's kidnapped by the monster.
  • Shout-Out: The bulldog that bites Shaggy bears a resemblance to Bandit.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Scooby and Shaggy get scared by a cobra in one section of the store. It should be asked why a pet store would have a dangerously cobra.
  • Spiders Are Scary: Scooby and Shaggy knock a tarantula terrarium off a shelf and promptly freak out from having the tarantulas crawling over them.
  • Sturdy and Steady Turtles: Fred, Velma, and the monster come across a turtle pond during the chase, and all three of them ride on the turtles' backs to get across (slowly, of course). Surprisingly, the much smaller turtles are able to withstand the weight of the three.
