Recap / Schitts Creek S 1 E 12 Surprise Party

Go To

Moira's birthday is fast approaching and Johnny wants to hold a surprise party for her. He initially doesn't get much assistance in organizing the party from either David or Alexis, the latter who doesn't even want to attend as she and Ted were planning on a romantic getaway in Chicago the day of the party since Ted has to attend a convention there anyway. As such, Johnny decides to enlist Roland and Jocelyn's help in the party masquerading as a black tie fundraiser that Jocelyn is organizing. But one problem with the plan arises after another, the most difficult to overcome being Moira, a born events planner, wanting to take control of the event, threatening not to attend if she doesn't get her way. Meanwhile, Stevie is still struggling with dealing with what it means to be friends with David. And Alexis, who is eventually convinced by Ted to stay for the party while he goes to Chicago alone, may see it as her opportunity to get closer to a now single Mutt in a romantic setting.

Tropes featured in this episode include:

  • Bad "Bad Acting": Roland is absolute Schitt about Jocelyn's "fundraiser". Jocelyn follows up with absolute confusion since Johnny and Roland failed to clue her in on the lie.
  • Birthday Episode: It's Moira's birthday.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Alexis insists her mother's birthday is the second Sunday in May.
  • Control Freak: A mostly well-intentioned version in Moira this episode; she demands to take over Jocelyn's charity event.
David: The North Korean army could not keep my mother under control when it comes to event planning!
  • Comically Missing the Point: Moira cannot understand David's implications of the "charity event".
Moira: Now you're just being cruel!
  • Dance of Romance: Moira and Johnny do a genuinely romantic version to 'Strangers in the Night'. Stevie and David do a more hesitant version, while Roland does a perverse version which involves him holding Jocelyn from behind.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: Mutt in the suit.
  • Hidden Depths: Moira immediately dives in and takes control of Jocelyn's fundraiser, because she refuses to let a good cause go unfunded.
  • Lethally Stupid: Especially prominent in Roland's plot during this episode, where he seems genuinely unable to understand Johnny's plan.
  • Ship Tease: Stevie and David do an admittedly awkward Dance of Romance.
  • Surprise Party: Johnny plans one for Moira, who eventually realizes what is going on.
